When SV Werder Bremen take to the pitch against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday, 15th March (15:30 CET), the aim will be to add three more points to the tally. The match against the 05ers pits two sides currently battling for survival against each other, with the Green-Whites eager to make it three straight wins in the league.
Team news: Jovan Milošević is set to miss the game against Mainz after suffering a back injury against Heidenheim. Karim Coulibaly (thigh), Maximilan Wöber (muscular problems), Amos Pieper (minor surgical procedure), Wesley Adeh (ligament tear), Mitchell Weiser (ACL) and Victor Boniface (knee surgery) are also all still sidelined. Meanwhile, Felix Agu and Samuel Mbangula could make their return to the squad, with head coach Daniel Thioune not ruling the pair out in his pre-match press conference.
Head coach Daniel Thioune on the opponent: “For me, they’re a really impressive side, especially since Urs Fischer came in as head coach. I don’t think too many people were expecting them to come back this strong, considering how few points they had at one stage of the season. They look really solid in the way they operate, and they set up very compactly. We know that’s how Urs Fischer likes his teams to play. The challenge for us is all about matching their level and then breaking them down by playing good football.”
The last meetings: These two sides have faced each other 40 times in all competitions so far, with the Green-Whites winning half of these duels (D8, L12). The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a 1-1 draw, with Jens Stage netting an equaliser for SVW late on (86’). Silvan Widmer had put Mainz ahead in the 36th minute.

Finding success under new head coaches: Werder are one of just three Bundesliga sides to have won both of their last two games, along with Bayern and Leipzig. The Green-Whites have a better goal difference across their last two games (+5) than FCB or RBL. In a table representing the period since Daniel Thioune took charge, Werder have been able to move up to 12th as a result of these two wins (level on points with Mainz). Meanwhile, Mainz are in sixth in a table representing the 12 games since Urs Fischer took charge.
The officials: The referee for Sunday’s clash will be Sascha Stegemann. His assistants will be Christof Günsch and Fabian Maibaum. Felix Bickel will be the fourth official, with Sören Storcks and Frederick Assmuth on duty as the video assistant referees.
