Following intense discussions which took place after the 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the SV Werder hierarchy have decided to part ways with head coach Horst Steffen with immediate effect. This was announced by the Green-Whites’ managing director for sport Clemens Fritz on Sunday morning. The fixture against the Foals marked the 10th Bundesliga match in succession without win for Werder Bremen.
“It was a tough decision, but we are no longer convinced of the fact that Horst was the person to spark the team’s turnaround following this long run without victory. This realisation was a bitter pill to swallow, since we truly value Horst; however, this is the result reached after analysis of our sporting situation and recent discussions. Therefore, we have decided to relieve Horst of his duties”, explained Clemens Fritz.
Assistant coaches Raphael Duarte and Christian Groß will take charge of the side in the interim. “We are working intensively to find a new head coach and will take the requisite amount of time in order to pinpoint the best solution for Werder”, concluded Fritz.
Horst Steffen arrived in Bremen from SV Elversberg in the summer. Over the course of his 20 Bundesliga matches in charge, the team registered four wins, seven draws, and nine defeats.
