Matchday 19 of the Bundesliga season will see SV Werder Bremen travel down to Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a 15:30 CET kick-off against last season’s runners-up in the German top flight. The Green-Whites can count on the support of at least 3,000 Werder fans for the clash at the BayArena on Saturday, 24th January. Head coach Horst Steffen spoke to the media in his press conference before the game, revealing what he expects from the match and giving insights on other topics, including...
...last weekend’s game against Frankfurt: “We felt a lot more disappointed the day after, compared to at the start of this week. It takes a little time to come to terms with a game like that, and so there were mixed feelings as we started to go again on Monday. We’re looking ahead now. It was a good game against Frankfurt, and we want to show the same positive notes from last week when we take on Leverkusen.”
...the upcoming opponent: “It’s been a while since the reverse fixture, and a lot has happened. They’ve been really successful over a lot of games now. Leverkusen are absolutely one of the best teams in this division, and it doesn’t matter how unfortunate their form has been at the start of this year. In the Champions League against Olympiacos, they created several dangerous chances in the second half especially. We’re standing before yet another game that’s going to demand a lot of us. Ultimately, of course, we can only focus on what we’re able to do, and so we want to deliver the best performance that we’re capable of.”
...his plan for the match: “We don’t go into any game with just a defensive plan in mind. We think about every phase of play in our preparations. Against Leverkusen, we might not see as much of the ball as we have done recently, but we still want to threaten and create our own chances either on the break or when attacking in a more structured way.”
)
...the previous encounter with Leverkusen: “Of course, you always start to relive the emotion that we all felt after the match, but that day is long gone now. This is a new game. Of course, though, we’re all hoping to enjoy those same emotions once again after a successful result on Saturday.”
...the league standings: “I’m not focusing too much on the table or where we might end up in two or three games’ time. Right now, we are where we are. It’s important to me that we work on our own game in training and practice doing what we want to do, and importantly that we improve as a side. When we get stronger as a team, then we’ll start to pick up more points as a result. I’m very optimistic that we can achieve this.”
...the situation around set-pieces: “Samuel pulled off a fantastic dead-ball delivery against Frankfurt. We have plenty of other players as well who are able to do that kind of thing from a set-piece. Romano has also been able to put the ball where it’s needed over the last few weeks.”
...a packed schedule with midweek football: “The next game is always the most important, so we’re fully focused on Leverkusen, and when that’s over, we’ll reassess the situation. We’re thinking about who’s recovered well and feels ready, who’s at risk of suspension. We’ll put out a full-strength line-up in Leverkusen.”
...the attack: “We have a few options who have put in good performances as of late, and that also means we have the chance to be flexible and rotate. Justin is one of those guys. I’m very happy with the performances that he’s been putting in, and I hope that we’ll have more cause for celebration with him soon. Jovan is bedding in more and more each day and really getting to grips with things. He’s getting to know our style of play better with every training session and every analysis that we do with him.”
