Werder Bremen finish a busy week with a visit from Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, just 4 days after hosting TSG Hoffenheim in a 1-0 defeat. Head coach Horst Steffen spoke in the press conference ahead of the clash with the Foals, discussing...
…the upcoming opponent: “We don’t know for sure whether they’ll come and play with a back-three or back-four, and so we need to be prepared for a multitude of scenarios. For me, they’re a solid Bundesliga side, who have struggled for form over recent weeks. For that reason, it should be a fairly evenly matched affair.”
...the reverse fixture: “That game is in the past. That’s how we approached the game against Leverkusen as well. We know that we’re capable of beating them, of course, but so much time has passed since then. Ideally, we’d win in similar fashion to last time out, but we’d also take a 1-0 win on Saturday.”
...changes to the system: “We started the season with a back-four, but we’ve become more pragmatic as the season has gone on and now we set up with a three-at-the-back. It’s always about doing the best we possibly can with the options available to us. We’d obviously love to see the team combining well on the pitch and playing attractive football. At the end of the day, we want to be successful here at SV Werder Bremen, for the club and for the fans.”
...the quality in the squad: “The basic level of quality is absolutely there. In the game against Hoffenheim, we simply weren’t good enough in our attacking play. In this case, Jens was right when he said that the quality on display was not good enough after the game. To concede right after they go a man down is unacceptable. We have to improve on these aspects.”
...the loss of Amos Pieper: “It’s a really bitter pill to swallow. We’ve all seen what Amos brings to the side over recent weeks. We would have really liked to have had him available for our upcoming fixtures. We’re not 100% sure yet on when we’re expecting to see him return.”

...Olivier Deman’s performance against Hoffenheim: “He played a solid game. He was able to perform in a way that would suggest he’s played a lot more games than he has. The set-pieces could have been a little better, but overall it was a decent showing.”
...the defensive department: “I’m glad that we’ve got Marco back for this game. Julian Malatini did well there against Hoffenheim, as did Senne Lynen despite not being accustomed to that role. I’m always pleased, though, when players come back into contention. Our depth at the back is fairly thin at the minute. Whether we can make anything happen in the transfer market over the next few days, we’ll have to wait and see.”
...the set-piece situation: “We’re working on the subject intensely. We want to pose a goal threat from these situations. Of course, we can do better here. We need to be more decisive in these moments.”
...the significance of this game: “For me, every game is important. It doesn’t matter whether we’re coming off of four straight wins or a run of losses. I always focus on our next match.”
