No upset today: SV Werder Bremen suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to FC Bayern München this afternoon. At a sold-out Weserstadion, Harry Kane scored twice before Leon Goretzka sealed victory for the champions.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTSKane at the double, Agu misses narrowly
Head coach Daniel Thioune had already revealed that he would make changes to the line-up that started the defeat in Freiburg during his pre-match press conference on Friday. Werder began the game with no fewer than four new starters compared to their last game, namely Niklas Stark, Felix Agu, Cameron Puertas and Marco Grüll. The Green-Whites looked lively in the opening proceedings, with Romano Schmid firing a left-footed effort wide (4’) and Agu just failing to connect with Puertas’ slide-rule ball across the box (6’).
After that, the visitors seized control of the game and patiently probed their hosts, waiting for openings to strike. Lennart Karl mazed into the penalty area before being brought down by Senne Lynen (19’); after consulting VAR, referee Bastian Dankert pointed to the spot. Harry Kane calmly converted the penalty into the corner to make it 1-0 to FCB (22’). Just three minutes later, the England captain struck again. Given far too much space just outside the box, he let fly from distance and, with the help of the inside of the post, doubled Bayern’s lead (25’).
Bayern finally proved fallible in attack after almost half an hour, as Kane found the run of Diaz in behind. The Colombia international was denied by Mio Backhaus in the resulting one-on-one, with Werder’s shot-stopper doing well to narrow the angle (29’). Down the other end, SVW came within inches of getting a goal back. After an impressive attacking move, Agu shifted onto his right foot and curled an effort just a whisker wide of the top corner (40’).

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS Werder grow into the game, Goretzka wraps up the win
After the break, Thioune’s side continued to try and impress themselves on the game more and more in what was a bright opening phase of the second half. Marco Grüll headed a Felix Agu delivery onto the far post (47’), before Justin Njinmah was denied a penalty after being brought down by Konrad Laimer due to starting his run in an offside position (51’). Bayern also looked dangerous in the final third early on in the second 45, although it was Werder who looked the more likely goalscorers overall. Romano Schmid had a golden chance in the middle of the box after 64 minutes, although only managed to fire the Marco Grüll delivery straight at Jonas Urbig.
The record champions proved themselves the more ruthless of the sides once again to wrap up their three points on the Weser. Alphonso Davies crossed into Leon Goretzka in a central position, who took one touch to control the ball before smashing it into the bottom left corner (70’). Werder kept searching for a goal late in the game, but were simply unable to show the cutting edge needed to make it count. Mio Backhaus impressed in the final notable moment of the game, denying Bayern a 4-0 lead by diving down superbly to block a low driven effort from Jamal Musiala (88’).
SVW make the short trip to the Millerntor next weekend, with the game against FC St. Pauli set to kick off at 17:30 CET on Sunday, 22nd February.
