SV Werder Bremen showed a tremendous amount of fight in the home game against FC Bayern München, but came up short in the decisive moments against the record champions. Despite the 3-0 defeat, the Green-Whites believe they can “take plenty of positives” from the performance. We’ve gathered all the key post-match reactions here.

Head coach Daniel Thioune: “I saw a team that fought and showed character, and that also looked to create chances. What was missing was the final touch. Ultimately, the outcome is likely what many had anticipated. But I felt the team showed resilience, and I’ve sensed that in recent days as well. This group is ready and willing. What we lacked today was that spark to light up the stadium. For that, we needed to take one of our chances early in the second half. We all know how important next week’s game is, and we’ll start focusing on that from tomorrow.”

Captain Marco Friedl: “The second goal is a mistake that simply can’t happen. Up front, we have to be more ruthless in front of goal and more precise in the final third. We need to take the mentality we showed in the second half into the coming weeks. We have what it takes to stay in the division. The next few weeks will show whether we’re truly a team, which I firmly believe we are. That’s when we’ll see whether we can get the job done, and I’m confident we will.”

Felix Agu on his return to the starting XI: “We had a good game plan and it worked in certain situations. In the final third, Bayern were just more clinical. Overall, though, there are plenty of positives to take. I think we matched their level for much of the game, but the decisive moments went their way. On a personal note, it was very special to be back out there in the stadium in front of the fans.”

Marco Grüll: "We set out to play good football and be courageous. We managed to do that well over large stretches of the game, but of course there were periods where Bayern looked dominant. We had our chances, though, and if we'd made it 2-1, then we might have got something out of today. Credit to the team, who gave everything right up until the final whistle."

Senne Lynen: "I'm really sorry to have given away the penalty. We were firmly in the game up until that point. It didn't feel like a foul from my perspective, and the referee saw it like that initally There's always a certain amount of contact in a challenge, but after the VAR review, that's the decision that was reached. We made a good start in the first 15 minutes, but Bayern will punish you for small mistakes. We had the opportunity to pick up points today, but now we look to the crucial upcoming weeks. We have to all band together in the fight to stay in the division."

Head of professional football Peter Niemeyer: “That was a courageous performance. The team showed the character that Daniel had demanded. I saw a united team display that we can build on. Now it’s about continuing to work hard so that the ball hits the inside of the post rather than the outside today. We need to stick together and be absolutely determined to get the ball across the line.”
