SV Werder Bremen and assistant coach Raphael Duarte will go their separate ways with immediate effect. The decision follows a meeting between Clemens Fritz, Werder’s managing director for sport, and the 29-year-old Luxembourger.

“We’re very grateful to Raphael for stepping in, together with Christian Groß, to take charge of the team on an interim basis after Horst Steffen was relieved of his duties. However, the responsibilities for the assistant coaches have changed in the new set-up under head coach Daniel Thioune – not least because Daniel has brought in Jan Hoepner as a coach he knows and trusts. With that in mind, we sat down with Raphael, as his role has changed the most compared to his time under Horst Steffen,” explained Clemens Fritz.

Raphael Duarte joined Werder at the start of the current season alongside Horst Steffen from SV Elversberg. Under Steffen, the Luxembourger was entrusted with a great deal of responsibility for running training sessions and was able to play a major part in shaping the work on the pitch.

“In our conversation, we came to the shared conclusion that it made sense to end our cooperation, as Raphael’s own ideas about his responsibilities differ from the role as it stands today. We hold Raphael in the highest regard both personally and professionally, and we wish him all the best for the future,” Fritz added.
