There was no time to celebrate and no chance for it to really sink in. Salim Musah’s first Bundesliga goal came in a blur, but the feeling afterwards was still one of frustration, as his late strike could not stop Werder slipping to a 2-1 defeat against RB Leipzig. Only after the final whistle did the 20-year-old finally crack a smile, throwing his arms around goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. His first Bundesliga goal did not bring any reward on the day, but it was another glimpse of what this fearless young forward can offer in the closing weeks of the season.

The towering striker at least managed to cause real problems for the defence of a side chasing a Champions League place late on. When head coach Daniel Thioune went for broke in the closing stages and paired Jovan Milošević with Musah up front, the substitute suddenly gave Werder a real spark and helped create several decent chances. “We’ve all seen the kind of dynamism he has,” said teammate Backhaus. “I’m absolutely delighted for him. He just needs to ride this momentum and keep making big strides for as long as he can.”

Musah first spun sharply away from his man, only to see his left-footed effort saved by Maarten Vandevoordt (82’). He then dragged another good chance wider than he would have wanted (90’+3), before finally keeping his cool a minute later to score his first Bundesliga goal (90’+4). “Salim is a great lad who just wants to learn and improve – we don’t need to hold him back,” said managing director for sport Clemens Fritz. “He plays with no fear, and that’s exactly what you need. He’s earned this moment because he’s been performing very well.”

After Karim Coulibaly and Patrice Čović, Musah is already the third player from Werder’s academy to score his first Bundesliga goal this season. Things have moved quickly for the powerful striker in recent weeks. He only made his top-flight debut in mid-March, then earned his first call-up for one of Germany’s youth sides, and has now scored for Werder in the Bundesliga. “He got his chance because we needed him, and he showed what he can do,” said Thioune. “It’s great fun working with him – though of course he would have swapped that first goal for three points.” Even so, Musah still made sure to take home a memento from a memorable afternoon, picking up the shirt of Leipzig’s rising star Yan Diomande.
