Werder head coach Daniel Thioune spoke to the media a day after the 3-0 defeat against FC Bayern München, discussing…
…the positives drawn from the match: “We have been able to make progress in terms of both our physical and mental strength. It was our most intense game of the season, a fact that’s backed up by the statistics. We haven’t covered as much ground or run as intensely, nor have we completed as many sprints before this season. The lads have the right mindset and are prepared to give it their all, which is what we need. Bayern struggled when we were in transition. We came close to scoring and had several chances, especially at the start of the second half, but we didn’t manage to take them. That’s what we now need to work on.”
…rotation in the starting line-up: “Over the last 10 days, I’ve given every player in the squad that’s fit a chance to showcase themselves. We want to be far more successful over the next weeks, and it helps if the team understand that we need everyone.”
…his passionate team talks: “I need the lads and they need me. Authenticity doesn’t wear off if you are who you are, and I’m exactly who I am. Oftentimes, it’s unfiltered, which can be good or bad at times. I came here in order to keep this team in the Bundesliga, and if you want that to happen, then you have to be willing to dedicate everything to that. I’m bursting with energy, but it’s also important to show the lads that I have the necessary experience in all areas and that I understand football. I think that helps them.”

…the centre-backs: “Niklas Stark came out of the game feeling good, but it was still a smart decision to take him off at half time, given his previous injury lay-off. He will train individually next week again, before returning to team training. We’ll then see whether he’s ready to feature next weekend again. Amos Pieper will be out for a bit longer, and I can’t name a definite timeline for his return yet.”
…Karim Coulibaly’s substitution: “Karim felt something, possible a muscle, in his backside. He will undergo an MRI tomorrow, after which we’ll be able to know more.”
…the upcoming opponents: “They will definitely be important games for us. The pressure is there, given the results over the past weeks and our current position in the table. If we play with the same energy as yesterday, then we will definitely be able to compete and be stronger than our opponents. I think that these games will be more open and that small moments will make the difference.”
