“It’s about energy and belief”

We’re gearing up for a coaching debut as we head down in the direction of Freiburg this weekend. On Saturday, 7th February, new Werder head coach Daniel Thioune will be at the helm for his first game in charge of the Green-Whites, and his first in the dugout in the German top-flight, as SVW take on SC away from home at 15:30 CET. In the press conference ahead of the affair, the 51-year-old took questions on...

...his debut as a head coach in the Bundesliga: “It’s really something special for me. You’re willing to give everything to get to this level, and when you first get your coaching license, this is what you’re hoping to achieve. I’m thrilled, honestly, and it’s such a privilege to be able to take the reins here. The team and the club are the main focus, of course, and we want to make sure that we have a good day out in Freiburg.”

...his first impressions of the club: “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind so far. In the last 24 hours we’ve been working tirelessly, and we’ve tried to get to know all the new faces here. The team need to get a feel for working with me first. There’s still a lot to come. The main thing is that we get to grips with everything, and for now, the game on Saturday is the priority.”

...the atmosphere in the squad: “When you go ten games without a win, then it’s hard for there to be a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere at the club. I know that myself, as someone who’s worked in professional football for a long time now. We need to try to rediscover that sense of freedom, combined with showing the necessary commitment. Everybody has a chance to show us what they can do and prove why they deserve to play. It’s about energy and belief, but also crucially about showing that willingness. I’m trying to get that across to the lads. If you can start to be successful on the pitch again, the right kind of relaxed atmosphere will develop as a result.”

...his initial approach: “It’ll come down to whether we can find the right solutions on the pitch. I’m the head coach, not a magician, and so I can’t give them everything they need in three days. I can’t make that many meaningful changes to the way they play in such a short period of time. It’s more about getting the turnaround up and running, and I’ve noticed that the lads are working very hard in this respect.”

...the opponent, SC Freiburg: “SC Freiburg are unbeaten in their last eight home games. The Europa-Park Stadion is a very tough place to go. They’re incredibly well organised in their patterns of play, which we need to be prepared for. I’m going to try and give the boys a few ideas on how we can deal with them, so that we can pose a threat to SC on the day.”

...Leo Bittencourt: “Leo has been here for seven years and has a special place at this club. He’s been giving it his all in training, as has everybody else. They all want to earn their place on the pitch. I know how important he is to the squad and to the club. We’ll make clear exactly what role he’ll play in his last few months here.”
