SV Werder Bremen found Sunday’s match against FC Erzgebirge Aue difficult for large parts of the game before finally adding to their narrow lead with two goals in second-half stoppage time. One of those two goals was scored by Niklas Schmidt, who registered his second strike of the season at an important time. The 24-year-old gave an interview as part of WERDER STROM Talk one day after the game and looked back at the events from the day before, showing how much the win meant to him and the team with his opening statement: “First of all I’m relieved that we won the game. We knew exactly what we had to do and what we wanted to do, and that was to win the game, which we managed to do.”

Werder knew the task in hand in Aue wasn’t going to be an easy one even before a ball was kicked. “They lost 6-0 a week ago and were playing their last home game of the season. They wanted to make a good account of themselves in their last game in the Bundesliga 2 for their fans. We knew they were going to give it everything,” explained Schmidt. “They did that right until the very end. We found it tough in the first half but we did create some chances. In the second half, however, we played a lot better, created many more opportunities and, in the end, did enough to deserve the win.”

Concentration instead of celebration

The joyous celebrations shared between the team and the travelling support shortly after the full-time whistle has quickly turned to focus on Werder’s next game according to our number 22. “It was made clear in the dressing room that it was an important victory, but that we’ve still got an important game to come. We absolutely want to win it, and that was also clear looking around the team: We enjoyed it yesterday but are now solely concentrated on next Sunday.”

Whilst this game is an all-or-nothing match for SVW, Regensburg find themselves sat in the middle of the table with nothing to play for. Schmidt refuses to admit that makes the task any easier for his side on Sunday, though. “Regensburg aren’t going to come here and say ‘Guys, you can win the game and then party’. Opponents that don’t have anything to lose do things that other opponents wouldn’t. They’re braver and play without fear,” said the 24-year-old. It’ll be important “to counteract that and make it clear to the opposition that they’re not winning the game. If we bring our quality onto the park then we can win any fixture. But first of all we need to get the basics right before getting ourselves over the line and making sure the result on the day is favourable for us.”

For Schmidt, it won’t just be the basic things but also the team’s mentality which will play a deciding, if not the most important role. “We need to forget the fact that things are looking good for us right now. That cannot be a saving grace for us at all. Like the coach has said to us, you need to keep a clear head and concentrate on your tasks. If you put in 100 per cent, you can win any game. It’s simply football,” commented the midfielder, who also thinks the fans have an important part to play. “Spirits are high, and that starts when we get on the bus to drive to the stadium and see how crazy the city is for football and for this club. Then you go out to warm up and see thousands of fans already there, and that gives you another boost. The support from the fans gives you that all-important extra push. We want to try and use the home advantage and give it our absolute all in front of the home crowd.”
