Ahead of Saturday evening’s (20/11/21) game between SV Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 (kick off: 20:30 CET), head coach Markus Anfang will be without three players. The head coach gave an update on who is in with a chance of starting and who will miss out during Thursday’s press conference.

Three players will definitely not play a part on Saturday evening against Schalke 04. Centre back Marco Friedl will miss out through a yellow card suspension and coronavirus infection. “Under the circumstances, Marco is doing well. It’s planned for him to come to Bremen on Saturday and do a relaxed session at the weekend. That’s been cleared by the health authorities,” said Clemens Fritz. Nicolai Rapp will also miss the game through suspension after accumulating five yellow cards.

Anfang optimistic about Toprak

Markus Anfang is also forced to do without Milos Veljkovic. The Serbia international suffered a muscle injury in his team’s World Cup qualifying win over Portugal. “It will still take a few more days. The injury is in the groin area, but it’s not the kind of injury that takes weeks to go away. We’re hoping things well move quickly,” said the head coach.

One player who could be in with a chance of a longer appearance after a cameo in Nürnberg is Ömer Toprak. “He was able to complete the training sessions without any problems during the past two weeks. We will sit down with Ömer in the next few days and decide whether and, above all, how long he will play.

Apart from these three players and Nick Woltemade, who is dealing with a long-term injury, the whole squad is at Markus Anfang's disposal ahead of the upcoming game.
