Ole Werner’s side picked up in the new year from where they left off before the break with a 3-0 home victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf in their first home game of 2022. Werder looked like the more likely side to score in a goalless first half but were lacking precision at the vital moments. Düsseldorf’s Kristoffer Peterson received a red card for a bad challenge on Felix Agu early in the second half before Werder really found their rhythm and striking duo Niclas Füllkrug (66’ and 88’) and Marvin Ducksch (80’) to make it a comfortable home victory for SVW.

Line-up and team news: Head coach Ole Werner stuck with his usual starting eleven, opting for the same XI that beat Aue, Regensburg and Hannover. There was one change to the bench, however, as Lars-Lukas Mai replaced Roger Assalé.

Starting XI: Pavlenka – Jung, Ducksch, Bittencourt, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Schmid, Toprak, Agu, Friedl and Groß.

Bench: Zetterer - Weiser, Schönfelder, Schmidt, Rapp, Mai, Gruev, Mbom and Dinkci.

Green-Whites looked dangerous, but the final pass was missing

First-half highlights:

3’: Milos Veljkovic sends Marvin Ducksch on his way with a long ball over the top from his own half. The striker chases after it and manages to control the ball, but his eventual shot lacks power and is a comfortable save for the F95 keeper.

15’: First big chance for Werder! SVW’s initial corner poses no danger initially, but in the second phase the ball is crossed back in again and eventually lands at Leonardo Bittencourt’s feet. He shifts it left and has a free shot at Kastenmeier’s goal, but the effort goes just wide of the right post.

20’: Close! Marvin Ducksch is back in the action and has a go at Kastenmeier’s goal from the right of the penalty box, and the Fortuna keeper does well to parry it out for a corner, which, after some initial uncertainty, is cleared by the guests.

30’: Khaled Narey sprints away from a Werder corner with the ball at his feet and has plenty of space to work in. He decides to shoot at goal at the end of his dribble, and Christian Groß is able to block the effort.

33’: Düsseldorf begin to apply some more pressure, and a last-second Anthony Jung clearance is required to avert the danger of Nicolas Gavory’s cross into the Werder penalty area. If Jung wasn’t there, it could have been very dangerous for the Green-Whites.

It all comes together for Werder after Fortuna red card

Second-half highlights:

47’: Marvin Ducksch strikes a free kick from around 25 yards out just left of the centre of the pitch, and the ball flies just over the bar. It wasn’t far away!

58’: Red card for Fortuna! Kristoffer Peterson is dismissed from the pitch by referee Tobias Reichel for a poor challenge on Felix Agu! He flew in with both legs and deservedly leaves the field!

66’: Big chance for Schmidt! Marvin Ducksch sprints down the left flank and lays it off to Niklas Schmidt, and the second-half substitute fires a shot towards goal, but Kastenmeier saves it again and it goes out for a corner.

66’: GOAL! Niclas Füllkrug makes it 1-0 to SVW! Marvin Ducksch plays a short corner to Niklas Schmidt and receives it back from him before crossing it into Düsseldorf’s box. He picks out his strike partner Niclas Füllkrug who heads it in for 1-0. The goal is initially ruled out for offside, but following a long VAR check the decision is overturned and the goal is awarded to Niclas Füllkrug, who was in an onside position.

73’: Romano Schmid plays Marvin Ducksch through on goal with a well-threaded pass which beats Fortuna’s defence. The striker attempts to poke it through the legs of the onrushing keeper, but fortunately for him, it rebounds off the keeper and falls right into Ducksch’s path, who simply has to tap the ball home. However, VAR judges that Ducksch was offside when Schmid played the pass, and so this time Werder’s goal is disallowed.

80’: GOAL! Marvin Ducksch makes it 2-0 to SVW! This one’s going to count! Despite being mid-fall, Niklas Schmidt manages to play the ball to Ducksch, who tucks it away coolly from the centre of the penalty box.

88’: GOAL! Niclas Füllkrug makes it 3-0 to SVW! That seals things! Marvin Ducksch intercepts a misplaced pass from the Düsseldorf defender and runs through on goal. He decides against shooting at the final moment and instead lays it square for Niclas Füllkrug, who completes his brace without difficulty.

Summary: Kristoffer Peterson’s red card helped Werder to really find their stride in the match, and a Niclas Füllkrug brace (66’ and 88’) with a Marvin Ducksch goal sandwiched in between (80’) in what was a brilliant second half for SVW and saw them to a comfortable victory. The Green-Whites have carried on the momentum from the end of 2021 and their winning streak in the league has now stretched to four games.
