The team has voted! Ömer Toprak has been elected the new captain of the Green-Whites, with Maximilian Eggestein and Leonardo Bittencourt as vice-captains. Completing the five-man team council are Christian Groß and Niclas Füllkrug. The experienced centre-back sat down for his first press conference on Wednesday and revealed how much he’s looking forward to leading the team out with the armband on: “I’m unbelievably proud to be captain of Werder! It’s even more special when you’ve been elected by your teammates and not appointed. The boys know my character and that spurs me on even more.”

Leading by example

Toprak is known for his defensive performances and, with his extensive experience of the game, his election as team captain is not surprising. On and off the pitch, the 32-year-old enjoys a good reputation and seeks to drive his teammates on with his own ambition. “I’ve always tried to help and give something back, especially with the younger players in the squad. I'm looking forward to taking on more responsibility that this role entails. I want everyone to feel comfortable so we can work on making amends for last season.”

In the press conference on Wednesday, the newly elected captain considered his future at the club. Although the 32-year-old is not in a position to make any predictions regarding the squad situation, he is certain of one thing: “I will always give 100% for this club, with or without the armband. But of course we are still in the transfer window, so I can't make any decisive statements about my future.” For now though, the focus is firmly on the upcoming league season and on the opening match against Hannover 96 on Saturday (20:30 CEST). At the same time, the defender returns frequently to the theme of making amends for last season. “Out of respect for Werder and last season, which we messed up, it's up to us to do better. Every single person has to give everything for this club,” emphasises Toprak.

“I will definitely have to buy the team a drink!”

With the pre-season preparations as good as completed, only a few more sessions remain before the start of a new season for the Green-Whites. As he looks back over the last few weeks, including the training camp in Zillertal, Toprak is satisfied with the team's performance: “We had good opponents in the friendlies and we trained hard. Of course, we’re not at 100% quite yet. It takes time to learn the new system of play the coach has brought in. On Saturday it's all about the points and we're all very happy that fans are allowed in the stadium again.”

Werder continue to be named by many as favourites due to the club’s extensive Bundesliga history. However, SVW’s new captain is quick to warn against complacency: “We’ve had two very difficult seasons and there are still a lot of question marks, especially with regard to the squad situation. It all takes time in this game. Obviously Werder belong in the top tier of football, but we cannot get complacent as nothing is guaranteed.”

In addition to being elected skipper, the centre-back also celebrates his birthday on Wednesday, giving the Ravensburg native two reasons to celebrate. “When everything has calmed down a bit, I will definitely have to buy the team a drink!” he laughs.
