With the pre-season preparations as good as completed, only a few more sessions remain before the start of a new season for the Green-Whites. As he looks back over the last few weeks, including the training camp in Zillertal, Toprak is satisfied with the team's performance: “We had good opponents in the friendlies and we trained hard. Of course, we’re not at 100% quite yet. It takes time to learn the new system of play the coach has brought in. On Saturday it's all about the points and we're all very happy that fans are allowed in the stadium again.”
Werder continue to be named by many as favourites due to the club’s extensive Bundesliga history. However, SVW’s new captain is quick to warn against complacency: “We’ve had two very difficult seasons and there are still a lot of question marks, especially with regard to the squad situation. It all takes time in this game. Obviously Werder belong in the top tier of football, but we cannot get complacent as nothing is guaranteed.”
In addition to being elected skipper, the centre-back also celebrates his birthday on Wednesday, giving the Ravensburg native two reasons to celebrate. “When everything has calmed down a bit, I will definitely have to buy the team a drink!” he laughs.
