SV Werder Bremen were unable to get more anything more than a point as they drew 1-1 at home to SV Sandhausen. The Green-Whites went looking for the lead immediately, but the chances they created and the shots they took weren’t threatening enough to find the opening goal. On the other hand, Sandhausen scored with their first real chance of the game through Pascal Testroet (64’). SVW continued to search for a goal and this eventually came courtesy of the returning Marvin Ducksch (73’), who drew Werder level. The home side had chances at the end to win it, but couldn’t find a late winner.

Line-up and team news: Head coach Ole Werner made two changes to the side which beat SV Darmstadt 98. Marvin Ducksch returned to the starting XI after a positive Coronavirus case, whilst Ilia Gruev came in for the injured Milos Veljkovic. Eren Dinkci, who started the match against Darmstadt, was named on the bench alongside Leonardo Bittencourt, who had also missed the last match after contracting COVID-19. Mio Backhaus replaced Michael Zetterer in the squad, with the 26-year-old keeper in isolation himself.

Starting XI: Pavlenka - Jung, Ducksch, Füllkrug, Schmid, Schmidt, Rapp, Agu, Gruev, Mbom and Groß.

Bench: Backhaus - Bittencourt, Assale, Schönfelder, Mai, Woltemade, Straudi, Chiarodia and Dinkci.

Werder unsuccessful in their attempts to break the deadlock

First-half highlights:

3’: Ilia Gruev finds a gap in the Sandhausen defence and picks out Marvin Ducksch with a pass, who then charges down the wing. However, his shot lands comfortably in the hands of SVS keeper Patrick Drewes.

5’: First booking! Referee Martin Petersen shows Tom Trybull the yellow card for a late challenge on Manuel Mbom.

15’: Sandhausen win back possession and launch a counter-attack, but Felix Agu gets back and across to clear the ball for a corner, and Pavlenka easily claims the ball from the resulting set-piece.

16’: Rapp’s long-range effort which slams the crossbar brings the first real noise from the fans inside the wohninvest WESERSTADION.

23’: Manuel Mbom has a go from the right-hand side of the penalty box. His powerful effort flies through a sea of bodies, and Ducksch is just too far away to get anything on it at the far post.

28’: Romano Schmid receives the ball in the box and clips it into the free-standing Niclas Füllkrug. The striker’s effort doesn’t find the back of the net, unfortunately, and instead goes out for a corner. It falls to Niklas Schmidt from the resulting corner, who decides to have a go from 18 yards, but Drewes is able to stop it.

44’: Sandhausen get another opportunity late in the first half, but Werder stay solid and don’t allow their opponents a clear chance. The away side’s attempted cross goes out for a goal kick.

45’: Big chance before the break! A Werder cross lands on the head of Felix Agu who’s lurking at the back post, but the effort goes straight at Drewes in what was  a serious opportunity to take the lead before half time.

Ducksch’s equaliser not enough as Werder draw

Second-half highlights:

47’: SVW start the second half how they ended the first, as a last-ditch tackle was required from the Sandhausen defender to take the ball off the foot of Marvin Ducksch and clear the ball for a corner. Werder players then have several attempts on goal in quick succession from said corner, but Drewes is equal to all of them and keeps the score at 0-0.

64’: Pascal Testroet scores to make it 1-0 to SV Sandhausen. The former Werder player did it all on his own and slotted it past Pavlenka.

73’: GOOOAL for Werder! Marvin Ducksch scores the equaliser as he pokes the ball into the far corner first time. Game on!

87’: So close! Füllkrug is denied by Drewes again, as the SVS keeper manages to turn Füllkrug’s shot away for a corner.

89’: Another booking! Martin Petersen shows Dario Dumic the yellow card.

90’+5: Full-time. The match ends 1-1.

Summary: Sandhausen were the tricky opposition Werder were expecting, putting in a solid defensive performance. SVW dominated the game over the 90 minutes, but they let too many chances go begging, whilst Sandhausen took their one big chance which means they leave Bremen with a point. The draw sees Werder go top of the league, but only by a solitary point.
