The new season is almost here! Two days before Werder begin their 2021/22 campaign, new vice-captain Maximilian Eggestein spoke to the media about the side’s approach: “Our focus has fully been on this season since pre-season began. The situation is what it is – we messed up last season and have to put things right now!”
Eggestein also spoke about his future at Werder, the first game of the season and being named as vice-captain. WERDER.DE has summarised his quotes.
…the new season: “We have the responsibility to put things right. As we don’t know how the squad will look, we are looking to rebuild with clear structures. Werder belong in the Bundesliga and it would be really nice to get promoted back at the first attempt together with this team. We’ve got a good squad and we all have high aspirations. The new signings have helped breathe some fresh air into the team too. It’s fair that our squad is being described as one of the strongest in the 2. Bundesliga. The overall mood in camp is that we messed up last season and need to make up for that now.”
…being voted as vice-captain: “It’s obviously a huge vote of confidence and I’m looking forward to taking on more responsibility within the team. It also shows that the players believe in myself and the rest of the team council. None of us have shirked responsibility. We’re aware of the situation.
…the first game against Hannover: “For me personally it’s the first time we’ll be aiming for the top spots in a league, so a good start is really important. Hannover are also definitely a side that would like to be aiming for a good season. We can’t compare our last game with them due to the differing situations. The DFB-Pokal and the league are two very different competitions. I don’t think that this will be one-sided like that day.
