Gruev’s first goal in a Werder shirt couldn’t have come at a better time. His effort after just nine minutes helped Bremen in their 4-1 victory over Schalke. “It was crazy. I was overcome with pure emotion. It is something I will always remember,” said the 21-year-old after the game.
Gruev, who was back in the starting eleven against Schalke, scored after just nine minutes. It was the perfect start for the Bulgarian in the top of the table clash. The goal came after a Mitchell Weiser shot was parried by Martin Fraisl into the path of Gruev, who was perfectly placed to head the ball home. “It was really important that he followed up the shot. It was a great performance from him as well as the rest of the team,” explained coach Ole Werner.
It was a special goal for the Bulgarian, who has been with SV since the U16s. “It’s something you dream of. It makes me so happy that I scored in Werder colours,” said Gruev, who has played 23 times for Bremen this season. The 21-year-old has worked tirelessly to break into the first team and he was rewarded for his dedication with the goal against Schalke.
More than 6,000 Werder fans were in attendance on Saturday and provided a stunning atmosphere throughout the game. “You could see what it meant to the fans when Duckschi scored the third and fourth goals. There is a special bond between the players and the supporters at this club. It just pushes you even harder. We are so lucky to have such good fans,” Gruev told WERDER TV.
