The winning streak under Ole Werner continues! The Green-Whites continued their fine run of form with a 3-0 home victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf as Werder temporarily climbed to third in the table and put themselves back in the race for promotion. The strike partnership of Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch made significant contributions to putting SVW on course for victory. “They both really want to score goals. They both know where the goal is, and we’re glad to have them both with us. May they continue to do so,” said Leonardo Bittencourt shortly after full time.

WERDER.DE summarises the match reaction of head coach Ole Werner, Leonardo Bittencourt and goalscorers Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch.

On the game:

Marvin Ducksch: “You have to say that we started the game well and we did what we set out to do. But then after the 20th minute, we didn’t play so well, and we’ll need to analyse that next week. Despite that, we deserved to win today.”

Niclas Füllkrug: “I think we started the game well, but then we had a couple of problems. The 3-0 sounds good, but I think we could still improve somewhat. Düsseldorf did better after the 20th minute and put us under some pressure. But you mustn’t forget that we’ve just had a long break and many of the players who played today had only trained a little bit before the game. Because of this, we can be pleased with the 3-0 win.”

Ole Werner: “When you look at the result, you would say it’s the perfect start to the year. We kept a clean sheet and at the end of the day we won the game convincingly. But in truth, our chances and goals only came after the red card. We also lost control of the game somewhat after a good start, and the game became much more balanced. We’ll certainly be looking to improve on that. The bottom line is, however, that wins still have to be earned and we worked hard for ours today. It’s a nice feeling to begin the new year with a win, and we’ll put another good shift in next week at training to give us the best possible chance of getting three points in Paderborn.”

On Werder’s strike partnership:

Marvin Ducksch: “For the first goal, I simply crossed it into the box and it was just good that he was there to meet it. For ‘Lücke’s’ second goal it would have been difficult for me to finish it from such a tight angle, and I saw him out of the corner of my eye and decided to put it on a plate for him.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “They both know this league very well, and they both know how to score a lot of goals in it. When you’ve got two players like that in your squad and find a system in which they can both play, then their attacking threat comes to life. They’re two different kinds of player, which is what makes it work so well. If they were similar, it would be more difficult. We’re happy to have them both with us and they’re more than welcome to carry on in this fashion.”

On the next steps:

Marvin Ducksch: “We want to keep taking it game by game. That’s what we planned on doing. We comfortably won this game, but I don’t know where that’ll leave us in the table. I think we’re now third, which is nice and something we can take into next week and then we want to win our match next weekend!”

Niclas Füllkrug: “I think the head coach has said it quite aptly. We need to see how the rest of it all goes. Two teams are ahead us in the table who played very during the first half of the season and were the front runners from the start. Of course we need to see how they deal with being hunted by the teams underneath them. We’re just going to keep our heads down for now and carry on trying to play our game.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “We were comfortably beaten by Paderborn here earlier on this season. We know it as well and it’ll be another difficult game because Paderborn are a strong team on the counter attack. But if you want to climb higher in the table, you need to perform in games like these. We’ll work hard all week, hopefully everyone stays fit and then we’ll be a team who is ready and capable of beating anyone we face.”
