This weekend presents the Green-Whites with the opportunity to distance themselves from the Bundesliga’s trailing pack. It’s not the first time that’s been the case though. “You have to say that we’ve been in this position one or two times before,” said Florian Kohfeldt at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with 1. FC Köln (15:30 CET). The Werder head coach praised his side’s work during training this week before issuing a demand from his players: “I want us to show that we have learned our lesson. We can’t simply go round in circles.”

Team news: Ömer Toprak completed Thursday’s training session individually following discussions with the medical staff. The centre-back remains an option in Cologne, however. Ludwig Augustinsson could also return to the matchday squad having missed the previous two games. Back-up goalkeeper Michael Zetterer won’t travel though, with Eduardo dos Santos Haesler filling in.

“Anticipating a very compact Köln team”

The boss' thoughts: The postponement of Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal tie in Regensburg meant that Werder were unexpectedly handed extra preparation time for this weekend’s Bundesliga fixture. “Perhaps our build-up to the Köln game has been more focused as a result, but I wouldn’t necessarily speak of an advantage or a disadvantage,” said Kohfeldt. While Köln will likely have to compensate for absentees at centre-back, the SVW head coach has more or less a full squad to choose from. The opposition’s inevitable tinkering makes them slightly tricker to predict, however. “We’re expecting them to change their system and I’m fully anticipating to come up against a very compact Köln team.” The Werder boys are determined to show that they can find solutions against a defensive setup, unlike in the meeting earlier this season. “Our goal as Werder Bremen has to be being able to grind out results in games like that and not letting them pass us by,” added the 38-year-old.

The last meeting: A deep-sitting Köln side gave Werder a headache in the first Bundesliga match-up in this campaign. The Green-Whites struggled to find a way through the visitors’ backline and went behind through an unlucky Niklas Moisander own goal in the 67th minute. A handball from Sebastian Bornauw gave Leonardo Bittencourt the opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot against his former club and he took full advantage, sealing the final 1-1 draw in the 82nd minute.

Important steps towards safety

Köln’s home form offers promise: The Billy Goats may be unbeaten in their last nine Bundesliga home games against Werder, but Köln have won just one of their top-flight matches on home soil in 2020/21 – a league low together with Schalke 04. Markus Gisdol’s side have collected 21 points from their 23 games so far and sit 14th in the table, two places behind Bremen.

Werder with momentum: Josh Sargent’s winner in the 2-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt last time out means that Werder come into the game on a high. The meeting with Köln not only offers Florian Kohfeldt’s side a chance to distance themselves from the Bundesliga’s trailing pack, but the Green-Whites will also be hoping to claim their first win in the famous cathedral city for the first time in over 15 years – Werder’s last victory in Cologne was a 4-1 win back on 11th December 2005.
