This will be the 110th Bundesliga match between SV Werder Bremen and FC Bayern München – no fixture has been played as often in Germany’s top flight. “You have to be on it for every minute of this game, otherwise it won’t go well,” said head coach Florian Kohfeldt at the pre-match press conference on Friday. Werder want to go into Saturday’s game (15:30 CET) with confidence, especially on the back of the point in Munich in the reverse fixture back in November.

The squad: Niclas Füllkrug, who suffered a blow to his Achilles against Bielefeld in midweek, was given the all-clear by Florian Kohfeldt. The 28-year-old striker was able to complete the final training session and is available to face Bayern. The only player not fit to face the Bavarians is Michael Zetterer, while Marco Friedl is suspended for the clash against his former side.

Kohfeldt: “We have to play like our lives depend on it”

The head coach on the game: Florian Kohfeldt wants his team to take confidence from the reverse fixture in November, although he doesn’t believe his side should base their performance on that day. “We defended really well on that occasion, but I think Bayern are a lot better than they were then,” commented Kohfeldt. “We should simply look forward to the game while also knowing it will be tough.” Werder’s coach thinks his team has actually been better going forwards against supposedly better opposition this season. “It wasn’t great in the last two games, but I’m excited to see how the side will deal with not being favourites.” The win over Bielefeld, which helped ease any relegation worries, shouldn’t mean that Werder take their foot off the gas against Bayern. “It’s maybe not the most important game ever but we should still play like our lives depend on it, otherwise we won’t have a chance. I’ve told the lads exactly that.”

The last meeting: Werder managed to end a historic losing run against Bayern on matchday 8 in Munich. After 22 straight defeats to the Bavarians, Kohfeldt’s men came away with a 1-1 draw after Maximilian Eggestein put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half time. Bremen could even have won that day, however Kingsley Coman’s goal after 62 minutes ensured the points were shared.

Time to end another losing streak

FCB unusually susceptible at the back: RB Leipzig went top last matchday for a few hours before Bayern came from 2-0 down to beat Borussia Dortmund 4-2 on Saturday evening to reclaim their top spot. This season, though, Hansi Flick’s side have been more susceptible at the back compared to normal. FCB have conceded 34 goals from 24 Bundesliga games this term, which is already more than they let in across the whole of 2019/20 (32).

Keep up the unbeaten run: Werder picked up an important win at Bielefeld in the rearranged midweek fixture. They will be hoping to pick up where they left off and their home form has been good recently too. Kohfeldt’s men are unbeaten in four home games (W2, D2) – the club hasn’t managed a run this long since May 2019. Overall, SVW have recorded three home wins this season, which is already more than they managed across the whole of 2019/20. However, Bremen have lost each of their last 12 competitive games against FC Bayern at the wohninvest WESERSTADION – a negative record in German professional football. It’s now time to change that...
