“It's a big problem for us that our record at home isn't great,” admitted Florian Kohfeldt in the pre-match press conference on Thursday. However, Werder’s head coach was pleased with the way that his team bounced back from the Union defeat away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen last weekend and will feel that it’s high time that the Green-Whites finally pick up another win at the wohninvest WESERSTADION against FC Augsburg (15:30 CET). “Victories at home always feel a lot better, so hopefully we can pick up some wins in Bremen starting on Saturday,” said Kohfeldt, making his aims for the home game clear. The coach also had some good news regarding Werder’s attack.

The squad: Werder’s attack will be given a big boost with the return of Milot Rashica who is set to be named in the matchday squad following his injury. Davie Selke and Niclas Füllkrug are also able to play for more minutes and may even start against the side from Bavaria. In defence, Kohfeldt will have to wait and see whether Ludwig Augustinsson will be fit to play after the Swedish international left training early on Wednesday due to a muscle complaint.

Showing desire

The head coach on the game: Following the Leverkusen game, Florian Kohfeldt spoke about taking the sharpness that was on display into the next few matches. His team have succeeded at this at Osterdeich, and he praised the way that the Werder players were training during the week. “I can feel how strongly we all want to win this game,” reported SVW’s coach. What’s crucial now is to bring that desire onto the pitch with them on Saturday. Similar to Union Berlin, the Green-Whites will be facing an unpleasant opponent in FC Augsburg at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. “Augsburg like to play with a lot of flexibility in their tactics,” analysed Kohfeldt. “Their positional play is difficult to anticipate and they like to play on the counter.” He credits his opposite number Heiko Herrlich with making FCA into a Bundesliga-quality side. “It’s clear that they’ve worked on that over the last few years.”

The last meeting: Werder scored three goals in a 3-2 win in Bremen for the first time in the 2019/20 season against Augsburg on 01/09/2019, but were beaten 2-1 in Bavaria later in the season. Although Florian Kohfeldt’s team took the lead in the 23rd minute through an own goal by Tin Jedvaj, a second half comeback from the hosts turned the game on its head. SVW welcome Heiko Herrlich’s team to the wohninvest WESERSTADION and will be looking to build on their last home win against Augsburg.

Searching for stability in the mid-table

Bundesliga balance: The Bundesliga fixture between Werder Bremen and Augsburg doesn’t have much in the way of history. The clubs first met in 2011 and since then there have been 18 battles between the sides. SVW have been able to come out on top in seven matches and picked up a point twice. Augsburg have won nine top-flight matches against Werder, their most wins against any one club. Werder, though, have managed to take the three points in four of the last five Bundesliga meetings.

A mixed start to the year: While Florian Kohfeldt’s team showed a reaction to the disappointing start to the year with a 1-1 draw in Leverkusen, Augsburg suffered a clear defeat (4-1) at home to VfB Stuttgart. Before that, the Fuggerstädter had won their first Bundesliga match of the year in Köln (1-0). Werder can’t catch Augsburg, who lie five points ahead of SVW in 10th, even with a win this weekend. A win would help Werder move into contention in the middle of the pack, however.
