A point at home and a clean sheet are big positives to take away from Saturday afternoon’s 0-0 draw with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. “A point is good. Any addition to our tally is a big positive, but we would have preferred the win,” commented head coach Florian Kohfeldt following the final whistle. “It’s not the big step out of danger we were hoping for. We’re still in the thick of the battle for survival and we have to fight hard in Augsburg,” stressed the coach.

On the game:

Niklas Moisander: “A point is better than nothing. We fought and gave everything we had today, but unfortunately we didn't manage to score. It's still a very important point in the relegation battle.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It was an even game and important for us to keep a clean sheet. I thought we had a bit more energy against Leipzig, but we'll take the point at the end of the day.”

Davie Selke: “It’s important to remember that we lost seven games in a row before this. I don't think anyone but us expected us to get a point this afternoon. We gave everything we had and made it as unpleasant for them as possible. Now it's a case of keeping that up. We were well in the game but unfortunately we weren't able to score. But full praise to the boys, we defended well and are happy to take the point.”

Frank Baumann: “Of course we would have been more pleased with a win, but you have to be happy about taking a point off a team like that. It was a committed performance today and we were particularly good in the second half. It was a relatively open game, although Leverkusen were more dangerous. We lacked that final bit of quality in front of goal. The point is a boost in the table, although obviously we would have liked to have picked up three today.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “I think you could see how much we wanted to win the match. In the end, maybe we left ourselves too open. It's good for our mentality that we've managed to pick up a point and end the losing run, but there's also a bit of disappointment. It was a very good performance and we succeeded at building on our display against Leipzig in the cup. The only thing we lacked was the final bit of commitment.”

On the battle for Bundesliga survival:

Niklas Moisander: “Augsburg are now two points ahead of us in the table and next week is a great opportunity to overtake them. Every game is a final from now on, but we have shown over the past few weeks that we are prepared.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We have to beat Augsburg. Then we’ll overtake them in the table.”

Davie Selke: “Now we have to rest and recover and take the positives from this match with us into next week. Our next match is a final in Augsburg. If we can beat them then we’ll have more points and overtake them.”

Frank Baumann: “I think you can see from our last two games that the team is very determined. We have a tough final two matches and we have to pick up points against Augsburg. We're in the middle of a relegation battle but the last few games have increased our self-belief.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Our fighting spirit must be the basis for the coming weeks. Now we have a crucial match against Augsburg and we have to put all egos aside. No matter who plays, we have to throw everything we have into the match and play at our best. Overtaking Augsburg has to be our priority but they played well last night against Stuttgart. We have to use this week well as next Saturday is extremely important.”

On Eren Dinkci’s straight red card:

Maximilian Eggestein: “There was no malicious intent from Eren. He was trying to stop the counterattack and caught Amiri. I hope he doesn't take it to heart too much.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Unfortunately, it is a clear red card. It wasn't a malicious, dangerous, or unsportsmanlike foul, but he was just too overeager in his tackle. He just wanted to stop the counterattack. He's still very young and sitting in the dressing room in a daze. There were a lot of emotions out there on the pitch today and he just lost his head for a moment. The most important thing is that Nadiem Amiri is okay. We can only apologise for the foul.”
