What a result! SV Werder Bremen took all three points and won the last Bundesliga game of 2020 against 1. FSV Mainz 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. After an evenly contested first half in which Werder did not manage to break through a stubborn Mainz side, the hosts started the second half on the front foot. Despite this though, it was late substitute Eren Sami Dinkci from Werder U23s who broke the deadlock on his Bundesliga debut, heading past Zentner in the 90th minute to give the Green-Whites all three points.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made one change to the starting XI that lost to Borussia Dortmund in midweek as Romano Schmid was brought in to replace Jean-Manuel Mbom. Leonardo Bittencourt dropped out at short notice due to an ankle injury, but should be in contention for the DFB-Pokal game on Wednesday. In his place, goalscorer Eren Dinkci was brought into the Bundesliga squad for the first time.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Augustinsson, Möhwald, Osako, Sargent, Schmid, Toprak, Gebre Selassie, Friedl, Eggestein, Groß.

Substitutes: Kapino, Veljkovic, Agu, Moisander, Chong, Erras, Mbom, Woltemade, Dinkci.

Control of the game not rewarded with a goal

First half highlights:

10th minute: Florian Kohfeldt’s team start well and create the first big chance of the game through Joshua Sargent. A high ball flies into the Mainz box, where the American meets it with his head, but Robin Zentner makes the save.

14th minute: Free kick for the hosts. A free kick is whipped dangerously into the area but Sargent is on hand to clear the ball with his head for a corner which comes to nothing.

17th minute: Robin Quaison dribbles forwards into the box and fires a shot towards goal, but it is off target.

24th minute: Maximilian Eggestein tries an effort after being laid off by Romano Schmid, but his effort is too weak to test Robin Zentner in the Mainz goal.

27th minute: A corner flies over to Joshua Sargent who is free at the far post. However he sees it late and cannot make good contact with the header. A missed chance!

31st minute: A free kick is whipped in by Kevin Stöger and finds its way to Edimilson Fernandes. His shot is well placed and makes a good save.

33rd minute: So close again! Marco Friedl fires an effort from long range that Robin Zentner just manages to tip round the post with his fingertips.

34th minute: End-to-end football as Jean-Philippe Mateta plays the ball through to Robin Quaison, who can only direct his effort the wrong side of the post.

Dinkci’s late winner decides it for Werder!

Second half highlights:

50th minute: The first chance after the restart goes to the hosts. Edimilson Fernandes tries an effort, before Robin Quaison catches the rebound, but it goes wide.

59th minute: SVW have their first change of the second half. Osako lets fly from around 18 metres out but sees his shot blocked by Jeremiah St. Juste.

69th minute: The tempo drops compared to the first half. Romano Schmid brings the ball forward into the area, before Kevin Möhwald volleys over Zentner’s goal.

70th minute: Werder attempt to play out from the back but lose it to Edimilson Fernandes, who tries an effort from the right-hand side that flies wide.

77th minute: A corner slips through to Maximilian Eggestein. The Werder midfielder takes it up but directs his shot wide of the mark.

90th minute: GOAL FOR WERDER! Substitute Eren Sami Dinkci, making his Bundesliga debut, finds space and heads Tahith Chong’s cross into the net! Unbelievable scenes!

Conclusion: As expected, it was a well-fought game by both sides and Werder had to give it everything they had. Florian Kohfeldt’s team had more possession, especially in the first half, and had the better chances as well. However, they were unable to score the goal that their performance deserved until late in the second half. After the restart, Mainz came out on the front foot but both sides could not find the opener. Eren Sami Dinkci, who usually plays for Werder U23s, came on to make his Bundesliga debut in the 85th minute and netted the winner for the Green-Whites just five minutes later from Tahith Chong’s cross. Werder take all three points in the final Bundesliga game of 2020.
