Following a difficult start to life in Bremen, Romano Schmid has now been able to get a foothold in the Werder first team. “Now I’ve made it in, so to speak, and I intend to give it everything I’ve got to keep it that way,” emphasised the 21-year-old in a midweek press conference on Wednesday. The only thing missing from a string of recent strong performances has been a goal., but the 21-year-old hopes to fix that sooner rather than later.
It’s no secret that goals are everything for attacking players. However, scoring is not the first priority for Schmid. “Of course I definitely want to score, but the most important thing at the moment is that the team works well together and we pick up the points we need,” stressed the Austrian. “It would mean a lot to me to score my first Bundesliga goal. Ultimately though, I want to do my job well and be successful with the team.”

Although he has started a number of games over recent weeks, Schmid doesn’t yet see himself as a regular for Florian Kohfeldt’s team. Instead, the attacker’s focus remains working hard to improve his game. “It’s true that I need to be taking more shots during games. That’s one area in particular where I need to improve and be braver,” he said. “I think I’ve shown that my shooting is good in training, so it’s just a case of showing what I can do on the pitch.”
In Saturday’s home clash against VfL Wolfsburg (15:30 CET), Werder’s number 20 will have the opportunity to help the Green-Whites pick up points again with his offensive drive. Schmid has picked up three assists in his debut season already and wants to build on that. “Against Wolfsburg, the aim is to pick up points. No one is resting; everyone is fully focused and motivated to achieve that goal.”
