While the Coronavirus pandemic has hit football hard, Jean-Manuel Mbom has enjoyed a successful season on the pitch. After making his Bundesliga debut in September, the 20-year-old wore the German U21 shirt for the first time during Thursday’s (12/11) friendly against Slovenia. Mbom is also in contention for another cap as Germany take on Wales in EURO qualification in Braunschweig tonight (18:15 CET).

“There are no words to describe some moments,” said Manuel Mbom after his U21 debut, in which he was introduced as a half time substitute. “He was very active and brave in the game against Slovenia. It wasn’t an easy game, but Manuel did his job well,” said director of football and scouting, Clemens Fritz.

Full focus on the tasks ahead

In today’s European Championship qualification match against Wales, the Germany U21 national team are looking to consolidate top spot in Group 9 and secure their place in the finals tournament. “You can feel the excitement for the match,” said Manuel Mbom, who said the team is fully focussed on the game. “The reception and support I received was really professional. I was accepted really well into the team,” said Mbom on joining up with the squad.

Clemens Fritz sees Mbom’s call up for the national team as a positive for Werder. “I am sure that he will return to Bremen with even more confidence in his ability and positive energy. These are all components which are good for our game.”
