Three days after the bitter home defeat to VfB Stuttgart, the Werder team have had time to digest the result and are training hard ahead of the weekend’s trip to Leipzig. As usual, Werder’s head of scouting and professional football Clemens Fritz, who celebrated his 40th birthday on Monday, was on hand to give his weekly update on all the most important topics around the club. “We don’t want to dwell on what’s already happened. Our focus is fixed firmly on what’s ahead,” emphasised Fritz in the digital press conference on Wednesday.

Clemens Fritz on…

…the squad: “It's crucial that we manage the intensity of sessions and how much strain is on the players, as we don't want to push it too far ahead of the upcoming midweek fixtures. That's why some of the boys have had shortened sessions today. Maxi Eggestein has had a knock to the calf and isn't training today, but just as a precaution. The same goes for Jiri Pavlenka.”

…the Stuttgart game: “We started the match well but we made too many mistakes in the final third. It was clear that we were lacking consistency in key moments against Stuttgart. We did much better in Munich, and it's obvious to us that that's the foundation of playing successful football. The team was very disappointed, but we don’t want to dwell on what’s already happened. Our focus is fixed firmly on what’s ahead.”

…the current phase of the season: “We’ve rejuvenated the team and have a clear plan for the direction we’re going in, which we’re convinced is the right one. It’s always been clear that there will be highs, but also lows to go with them. What’s important is that everyone knows that they have to give it everything they’ve got. We’re also helped by the clear communication that we have within the club so that we can address the mistakes that have cropped up.”

…the mood in camp: “We shouldn’t be looking back at last season. It doesn’t do any good to dwell on the past. We need to focus on our future; that’s the most important thing for the team. None of the players were pleased with last season and you can feel the energy and desire to progress and improve on that. That definitely unites the boys and pushed them forwards.”

…this weekend’s opponent: “We're going up against an excellent team on Saturday, and they will be full of self-confidence. What counts is what we can bring to our game. We shouldn't be afraid of them. We can challenge them so long as we stay compact and take our chances.”

…the situation with the ongoing pandemic: “It’s always in the back of your mind obviously. I think everyone’s concerned about it. We’re doing everything we can to keep playing football, however the first priority is always to keep everyone healthy. All we can do for now is to keep concentrating on enforcing and following hygiene regulations in the best possible way. We just hope that we can continue to play the current season without interruption.”

...Davie Selke: "He really energised us when he came on at the weekend. He won a lot of headers and was everywhere. He’s always at full throttle in training, wants to win games, and is extremely unpleasant to face as an opponent. Davie brings a lot to our game that helps us get ahead.”

...Tahith Chong: "We don't need to talk about the penalty incident on Sunday. You can see that is something that’s frustrated him massively. We’ve already seen him develop, both in terms of his defensive work and getting forwards. He’s a dangerous player because of his speed and his willingness to take people on. But we shouldn’t forget that he’s still young and this was only his third career start. It won’t click for him straight away.”
