SV Werder Bremen are in desperate need of a win as they welcome 1. FC Köln to the wohninvest WESERSTADION on Saturday, 27th June (15:30 CEST). Three points against the Billy Goats would be enough for Werder to move up into 16th place and to keep their hopes of staying up alive. It’s a chance that Werder are looking to take, even if they are dependent on a helping hand from Union Berlin, who take on fellow relegation candidates Fortuna Dϋsseldorf in the simultaneous kick-off. “There is nothing more important than this game. The team is highly-motivated,” said Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt.

The squad: Any doubts about whether or not Theodor Gebre Selassie and Milos Veljkovic will be able to feature this weekend have been erased. The duo had picked up knocks recently, but have recovered in time and will likely feature against Köln. Kevin Vogt and Ömer Toprak will also return to the squad on Saturday. The same cannot be said for Sebastian Langkamp, however, who will miss out with a thigh injury. It remains to be seen whether Milot Rashica will be fit in time for Saturday’s match, with a decision set to be made after Friday’s final training session.

Finding the right balance

The head coach on the match: Werder will be looking to score often in order to win this game and to better Fortuna's goal difference. It’s certain, however, that Markus Gisdol’s side will not simply “roll over” for the Green-Whites. The key will be to find the right balance in order to be successful. “We will take a balanced approach to the game,” said Kohfeldt. The head coach is also appealing to his players' emotions in the run-up to the match. “We will take these emotions and harness them ahead of the game. We need to bring these emotions to the pitch,” he said. “We need to grit our teeth and get out there! We will fight right until the end.” However, it would be a mistake to say that these emotions are the result of the pressure facing the team. Kohfeldt is not looking to place additional pressure on his side, as they will look to play their game regardless of the current tense situation.

The last meeting: In truth, it wasn't an early Christmas present for Werder fans; FC beat SVW 1-0 in the RheinEnergieSTADION before the winter break. Jhon Córdoba scored the only goal of the game in the first half. Werder tried with all their might, but were unable to get on the scoresheet.

"Not without hope"

There's still a chance: SV Werder Bremen don't have total control over their own fate ahead of the final day of the 2019/20 season. Should Fortuna beat 1. FC Union Berlin, then a Bremen win wouldn't matter. So all Green-and-White hopes are pinned on "Iron Union", if Werder are to be in with a chance of clawing back the two-point deficit. But there is still a very real chance that Werder can overtake their Rhineland rivals, and end the season in the relegation playoff spot. And this chance must be taken. "We're not without hope. We need two points and a goal difference swing of four. Therefore, we're still highly motivated," said Florian Kohfeldt.

No goodbyes: "We've decided not to say our goodbyes to any players on Saturday. We still don't know if it'll be our final game of the season, and want to do it when the conditions for it are perfect. An empty stadium is not the best place to say goodbye to beloved players," Frank Baumann said. The most prominent departure is certainly that of Claudio Pizarro, who will receive a noteworthy send-off in the form of a farewell game in the WESERSTADION.

Officials: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the DFB has decided that the officials for the game will be announced on the day of the game itself.
