Werder Bremen once again failed to pick up a victory in the game against Schalke 04. The 2-1 loss means that the Green-Whites have now gone eight Bundesliga matches without a win. “We’re down at the bottom of the table; we can’t sugar coat it,” Maximilian Eggestein said after missing out on the points once again. However, the three points were already gone after the first hour. “We created our first real chance of the game in the 60th minute; that’s simply not good enough,” Ludwig Augustinsson criticised the team’s performance after making his return from injury.

On the match:

Ludwig Augustinsson: "We're at home and we let in two goals; that's simply not good enough. We failed to put them under any sort of pressure in the first half. We barely created any chances in the first 60 minutes.”

Davy Klaassen: “We struggled to get a hold of the game in the first half; we took a lot more risks in the second half. When they made it 2-0 we had nothing to lose. In my opinion the key moments decided the match.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It’s a frustrating result. It was a very tactical affair between two even teams. Schalke scored with their first opportunity and their second goal was just a mistake from us. We didn’t do well enough with the chances that we had. When you go 2-0 down against such a strong defensive side as Schalke, it’s really difficult to come back. I wouldn’t say that Schalke were much better than us, but certainly more clever.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a really tactical game in the first 60 minutes. I wasn’t happy about that. It was very even, but Schalke were clinical with their chances. For us, we were just missing that bit of quality in the final third. We didn’t pass the ball around well enough and didn’t take enough risks. We didn’t play with as much confidence as I had hoped. However we started to do this as soon as they made it 2-0; I’m not sure why. After that you could see what we are capable of. We started to play our football and almost made it 2-2. It’s a shame that we didn’t do this sooner.”

Frank Baumann: “We’re not happy. We didn’t perform well enough; we weren’t confident enough and didn’t have any sort of conviction. We only started to threaten them towards the end of the match. After they made it 2-0 we showed our character and created a number of chances, but we weren’t good enough without the ball. We were too passive; however I don’t believe Schalke were the better team.”

On their inconsistent personnel situation:

Ludwig Augustinsson: “We’ve got lots of good defenders in the squad, but have struggled to maintain a consistent back four this season. However, that’s no excuse. We need to be self-critical.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Of course it’s not ideal but it’s also no excuse. Both of their goals today had nothing to do with that.”

On their league position:

Ludwig Augustinsson: “There have been a few games where we’ve played well and deserved more points than we’ve got. But we need to come to terms with where we are. We really need to start winning games before the winter break. I still believe in us as a team.”

Davy Klaassen: “We’re all aware of the situation. One thing that makes us stand out is how close we are as a team.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It’s clear that there is a level of uncertainty after eight games without a win. We’re in a difficult period and we need to be careful. However, we all believe in ourselves as a team. We all think we’re on the right track, but we need to start picking up points quickly.”

Frank Baumann: “I’m confident that we will pick up enough points by Christmas to improve our position.”

On their mentality:

Ludwig Augustinsson: “Of course everyone’s really frustrated in the dressing room, but we’ve shown time and time again over the past few years that we have a really strong mentality, and have come through difficult periods. We have a fantastic team, with a great togetherness. We have a clear idea on how we want to play football and we will come back from this.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It’s always easier to stick together when you’re playing well. But in the difficult position that we find ourselves in, it’s really important to do this. I know my squad and they won’t give up.”
