Werder’s five game unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday afternoon in Gladbach, falling to a 3-1 defeat. After a quick-fire double early on from the hosts, head coach Florian Kohfeldt’s side came close to scoring on a number of occasions. However, in the end, Klaassen’s missed penalty, Osako’s disallowed goal and Bittencourt’s late consolation all epitomise the current situation Werder find themselves in. The Green-Whites are now dangerously close to the relegation zone after just eleven points from seven games. Kohfeldt is therefore calling for his side to wake up: “We need to start picking up points immediately.”

On the match:

Florian Kohfeldt: “I don’t know if the better team won today. They were certainly more efficient. We started the game well and they scored two goals out of nothing. We need to learn to defend set pieces better. For their second goal it was a fantastic pass. Afterwards, we had lots more chances and we should have scored. We started the second half really well and got the penalty. After that we had even more chances but their keeper was on top form today.”

Davy Klaassen: “We gave away two goals in the first half then simply failed to take our chances. When it was 3-0 it perhaps didn’t tell the full story. For my penalty I wanted to hit it a bit higher; it was too low.”

Frank Baumann: “We came away to the league leaders and were by no means the inferior side, but nevertheless we leave without any points. It’s frustrating. We should have taken the lead before they scored their first goal; we had enough chances to do that. At least we showed through our consolation goal at the end that we can score goals.”

On their problems defending set pieces:

Florian Kohfeldt: “It costs us time and time again; it’s really frustrating. We need to change the way that we defend them. We’ve spoken about it and worked on it in training. We always work to build up the pitch then concede such simple goals.”

Davy Klaassen: “It’s very frustrating. We’ve spoken about it and practiced it in training, but at the end of the day it comes down to man against man. We simply need to be stronger in the air and make sure we win the aerial duels.”

Frank Baumann: “Once again we weren’t able to defend a set piece and we made it far too easy for the opponent. We need to work on it; these are mistakes you simply can’t be making. We need to improve quickly.”

On their current position in the table:

Florian Kohfeldt: “In my opinion, we played with confidence and continued to play well even when it was 3-0. That makes me optimistic for the coming weeks. Of course it’s a dangerous position to be in and we can’t lose sight of the big picture. We have eleven points; that’s simply not enough. We can’t beat around the bush. However, we need to keep our belief in our style of football and believe that we can win against anyone playing our way."

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “We’re really annoyed and disappointed because we played well. It didn’t go how we wanted it to. We need to work hard and start picking up more points.”

Leo Bittencourt: “We’re going in the right direction. Of course we don’t have many points but there’s no use in questioning everything. We shouldn’t let ourselves panic. We need to address what we did wrong and make sure we get back on track.”

Frank Baumann: “The performances and the commitment are there. Eventually we will be rewarded, but it needs to happen quickly. The pressure is growing and we need to deal with it well. But I’m confident that the team can do that; they’ve proven that time and time again.”
