The relief was visible on every face. The 2-2 draw in Heidenheim secured Bundesliga survival for SV Werder Bremen. "I’m just happy that we managed to stay up. We were written off so many times, but we kept coming back," said head coach Florian Kohfeldt after the game.
Florian Kohfeldt: "After a season like that, it wouldn’t have made sense for us to just see out the win. But that doesn’t matter, we’re in the Bundesliga. All the rest will be discussed tomorrow."
Davy Klaassen: "We’re just relieved. After this season, which has been really difficult for us from the start, we’re just happy. We definitely should have wrapped it up sooner. Especially around the hour mark, we put on lots of pressure. We have to score there."
Florian Kohfeldt: "I’m just happy we managed to stay up. We were written off so many times, but we kept coming back. I know what this means to the city, the people in Bremen. Every criticism, from a football perspective, is justified, but the boys showed their character and mentality. Respect for how they performed in the end."
Frank Baumann: "The tension and pressure has been very high in the last few months. I can still feel some of it. We had to fight until the last second, there were nerves and setbacks to put behind us. We’ve prepared the team for the last six months for that. We always said: we will have our setbacks but will always get back up when we fall, and it could go all the way to a relegation play-off. The team was ready for that. We could have made things easy for ourselves throughout the whole season, but unfortunately we chose the difficult path more often than not."
Davy Klaassen: "It was a very long season and we’re happy that we’ll be playing Bundesliga football next year now. But we need to a lot better in the new season."
