Werder and Everton finish with a 0-0 draw

No goals to celebrate on Fans’ Day. Before the season gets underway with the DFB-Pokal first round next week, Werder’s final pre-season friendly against Everton finished in a scoreless draw in front of a spirited crowd at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. Werder started the opening minutes of the first half on the wrong foot, as Everton challenged the Green-Whites. Whereas the Premier League club looked dangerous in front of the Werder goal a few times, head coach Florian Kohfeldt’s side were only able to create one solid chance through striker Niclas Füllkrug. Overall, the hosts found it difficult to keep the ball within the opponent’s half. In contrast, Everton did well to put the Green-Whites on their back foot, forcing them to defend primarily. Werder got off to a better start in the second half. The Green-Whites managed to create several good chances for themselves against a clever defensive side from England, and could –and should have - have easily taken the lead through Yuya Osako (61’) and Josh Sargent (77’).

Line-up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made just one change to the starting line up from the previous friendly against SD Eibar (4-0 win), sticking with a proven 4-3-3 formation. Niclas Füllkrug replaced Josh Sargent as striker. The three-man offense was completed with Milot Rashica and Yuya Osako on the wings. Lining up behind them was a three-man midfield. Nuri Sahin featured as a No. 6, with Maximilian Eggestein and Davy Klaassen playing as attacking central midfielders. Running the back four was captain Niklas Moisander, making his first appearance as captain of the Green-Whites, as well as Christian Groß. Theodor Gebre Selassie and Marco Friedl featured as wing-backs. As expected, Jiri Pavlenka started in goal.

Werder’s starting line up: Pavlenka - Friedl, Groß, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, Sahin, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Rashica, Füllkrug, Osako.

Substitutes: Kapino - Beijmo, Harnik, Pizarro, Sargent, J. Eggestein, Straudi, Wiemann.

2‘ minute: Everton have the first chance on goal. Delph plays through to the left side. After a steep cross in, Werder captain Niklas Moisander clears it before Everton striker Calvert-Lewin could get a foot on it.

13’ minute: Finally, Werder’s first attempt! Niclas Füllkrug has a go from outside the box. His shot goes just wide of the net after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is able to get his fingertips on it.

24’ minute: The guests with three attempts on goal. Everton have had the best chances on goal so far. Richarlison puts the ball on net mid-fall. Jiri Pavlenka comes out and saves the first attempt before doing it a second time. The next chance falls to Bernard, but the attacker sends his shot wide.

43’ minute: While Werder are having a difficult go during the first half, fans of the Green-Whites are serving for a lively atmosphere in the wohninvest WESERSTADION on Fans’ Day.

45’ minute – halftime in the wohninvest WESERSTADION: Both teams head to the dressing room scoreless – a result representative of the performances. However, Everton appeared to be the better of the two teams in the first half and had more possession. Aside from a good chance from Niclas Füllkrug, Werder have mainly been playing defense.

No goals, but Werder appear more awake

59’ minute: Nuri Sahin’s free-kick from just outside the box is on target, but Pickford is there to pick off the shot.

61’ minute: A massive chance for the Green-Whites! Yuya Osako finds himself wide open in the 18-yard box and delivers a quick left-footed shot. But, the shot from the Japanese midfielder is not precise enough, as Pickford is able to make the save once again.

77’ minute: Werder with a chance once again - it’s about time that someone scored. Claudio Pizarro and Josh Sargent go on the counter-attack at home, with the American trying to send the ball past Pickford. But, the goalkeeper stretches his legs once again to keep out the shot.

87’ minute: Stefanos Kapino – who was subbed on at halftime – has to prove himself twice in a row. Jiri Pavlenka’s backup keeps out shots from both Tosus and Andre Gomes. Way to go, Kapi!

90’ minute - final whistle: Werder and Everton finish with a deserved scoreless draw. Whereas the Premier League club were the stronger side during the first half, Werder were able to find their way into the match during the second and would have deserved to get a goal at home on Fans’ Day.

Post-match reaction

Florian Kohfeldt: "The result is okay, drawing against Everton is alright. Overall, the conclusions we've drawn are positive. We created several chances, although we should have used them better."

Claudio Pizarro:  "We were still a bit tired today. We needed to have more possession in order to create more chances. It's always important not to lose the last friendly. Now, we have another week to add the final touches."

Niclas Füllkrug: "We could have used some of our chances better, but overall it was a good test. There were some good performances. We remained compact on defense. Now we need to get that freshness back during this last week before the season gets undeway."

Niklas Moisander: "It wasn't easy today, but it was a good final test for us, even if our legs were a bit tired. We kept things scoreless. We need to be a bit more precise on offense - that comes with being more alert."
