SV Werder have now gone eight Bundesliga matches without a win after their 2-1 defeat against FC Schalke 04 on Matchday 12. 42,100 fans witnessed a slow burner of a game with a largely uneventful first half. Schalke were the better side overall and had the lion’s share of the possession, with Werder trying to hit them on the counter. However both sides defended well in a compact shape, refusing to allow either side any sort of space, up until the 43rd minute when Amine Harit gave the visitors the lead. Werder’s bad luck continued after the break as Benito Raman capitalised on a defensive error to double his side’s advantage (53’). Yuya Osako’s late goal turned out to be nothing more than a consolation goal as Schalke took all three points back home to Gelsenkirchen (80’).

Line up and formation: Ludde is back! Ludwig Augustinsson celebrated his first start of the season after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury. The Swedish fullback took Marco Friedl’s place in the starting XI. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made two changes to the team that started the 3-1 defeat against Gladbach two weeks ago. Philipp Bargfrede also came into the team in place of Leonardo Bittencourt, who was dropped to the bench. Kohfeldt set his team up in a 3-5-2 formation in attack, with Nuri Sahin dropping between the two centre halves in transition.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Augustinsson, Langkamp, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie, Bargfrede, Sahin, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Osako, Rashica.

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Bittencourt, Pizarro, Sargent, J. Eggestein, Friedl, Groß, Goller.

A late breakthrough

The highlights from the first half:

14th minute: Schalke with most of the ball, Werder with the chances. Ludwig Augustinsson plays a good ball in behind for Milot Rashica, who picks up the pace and finds Maximilian Eggestein just outside the box. Werder’s number 35 tries his luck but the ball deflects into the hands of Nübel.

23rd minute: Milot Rashica is strong both in defence and in attack. Werder’s number seven makes a last ditch tackle to prevent Amine Harit from opening the scoring.

25th minute: Phew! We can breathe again. Schalke 04 have the best chance of the game so far. Daniel Caliguiri dribbles across the edge of the penalty area and releases a cracking strike on goal, however his effort smacks against the post before rebounding off Jiri Pavlenka and behind for a corner.

43rd minute: Goal for Schalke. Amine Harit draws first blood. Werder allow the Moroccan too much time and space in the penalty area and he finds the far corner with a curling effort past Jiri Pavlenka.

45th minute + 1:  Half time on the Osterdeich. SV Werder trail 1-0 at the break.

Raman doubles Schalke's lead, Osako with a consolation goal

The highlights from the second half:

53rd minute: Goal for Schalke 04. Benito Raman doubles Schalke’s lead. Sebastian Langkamp struggles to control the ball in his own half and Raman capitalises on his error, before slotting the ball under Jiri Pavlenka to find the back of the net.

62nd minute: Werder come close. Milot Rashica gets the crowd off their feet with an impressive effort from 18 yards out. The Kosovan winger tries his luck with a left-footed strike but unfortunately he can’t quite find the far-right corner, with Nübel beaten. Keep going, Werder!

80th minute: GOAL FOR WERDER! Yuya Osako pulls one back for the hosts. Davy Klaassen’s pinpoint cross finds the feet of Theodor Gebre Selassie in the box, whose close-range effort is parried by Nübel. However, Schalke’s keeper only manages to push the ball out into the feet of Osako, who finishes into an empty net. Werder are back in it!

90th minute + 5: SO CLOSE! That was the last chance for Werder to nick a point. Milot Rashica suddenly finds himself in space in the opposition’s box and gets a quick-fire shot away, however Nübel rises to the occasion and makes another stop to deny the Kosovan.

90th minute + 5: There’s the final whistle. It ends 2-1 to Schalke.

Match summary: Not much room, not many chances. Both sides defended strongly and refused to allow the opposition any room in an even first half. The Green Whites defended in numbers and didn’t open themselves up. However, at the other end of the pitch, Florian Kohfeldt’s side lacked the quality in attack to cause any real problems for the Royal Blues. The visitors capitalised on a lapse in concentration right at the end of the first half, taking the lead through Amine Harit in the 43rd minute. The second half began just as the first ended. Once again, Schalke took advantage of a mistake from Werder and doubled their lead through Benito Raman (53’). The Green-Whites refused to give up and managed to pull one back through Yuya Osako with 10 minutes to go (80’), however it proved to be just a consolation goal as Schalke took home all three points.
