SV Werder are defeated in added time on Bundesliga matchday 14 with VAR overturning Sven Michel’s winner, earning SC Paderborn a 1-0 victory. 39,870 fans witnessed an even first half at the wohninvest WESERSTADION, with neither side able to break the deadlock. SV Werder worked hard to find a way through Paderborn’s robust defensive line, but had to stay alert to deal with the visitor’s rapid counter attacks. Both teams were ultimately missing that quality in the final third and went into the break goalless. The Green Whites made a much better start to the second period but unfortunately failed to convert any of their chances, leaving them without any of the points.

Line up and formation: The captain is back in the starting XI having been out for a number of months due to injury. The Finn joins up with Milos Veljkovic in the heart of the defence, replacing Christian Groß in the side. That was the only change Florian Kohfeldt made to the team that started last week’s away win at VfL Wolfsburg. The Green Whites lined up in their usual 4-3-3 formation.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka,  Augustinsson, Moisander, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie, Bargfrede, M. Eggestein, Klaassen, Rashica, Osako, Bittencourt.

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Pizarro, Langkamp, Sahin, J. Eggestein, Friedl, Groß, Goller

Intense yet ineffective

The highlights from the first half:

8th minute: Paderborn have the first chance of the game. Antwi-Adjei tests Jiri Pavlenka nice and early with an effort from outside of the box, however it is too close to the goalkeeper who manages to parry it wide.

14th minute: It’s taken a quarter of an hour but the Green Whites finally have their first opportunity. Leonardo Bittencourt has the initial chance which is saved by Zingerle into the path of Davy Klaassen. The vice-captain pounces onto the rebound but directs his shot straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.

25th minute: Maximilian Eggestein almost managed to celebrate his birthday with a goal. The 23-year-old cuts inside onto his favoured right foot after some nice work from Yuya Osako, but his resulting strike travels harmlessly over the crossbar. Unlucky, Maxi!

29th minute: Jiri Pavlenka is called into action once again as Vasiliadis unleashes a peach of a strike from long range. However the Czech international rises to the task to make an impressive save.

45th minute + 1: Half time on the Osterdeich. The score remains goalless as the two teams head into the dressing rooms.

VAR seals it for Paderborn

The highlights from the second half:

64th minute: Maxi Eggestein tries his luck from distance once again, on his weaker foot this time around. However, Zingerle is on hand again to push it away for a corner. The Green Whites are getting closer to taking the lead.

85th minute: The net bulges but not in the way that Werder would have wanted. Milot Rashica leads the counter attack for the hosts and plays through Leonardo Bittencourt, but the number ten takes too long to get his shot away and can only find the side netting.

90th minute + 3: After a long consultation with VAR, SC Paderborn take the lead right at the death. A long range strike deflects into the path of Mamba, who looked to be offside before laying it off for Sven Michel to finish into an empty net. The referee had initially ruled the goal out for offside however the replays showed that Gebre Selassie was playing the Paderborn striker onside, meaning that the goal stood.

90th minute + 7: Full time at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. It ends 1-0 to SC Paderborn.

Match summary: Very disappointing. Werder fall to defeat in the final few minutes after a largely uneventful affair. The Green Whites struggled to create clear-cut chances in an even first half and were just missing that bit of quality in the final third. The visitors proved to be a threat on the counter, testing Jiri Pavlenka on numerous occasions. Werder made a much better start to the second half but they were forced to stay patient. Despite being the better side, SVW failed to break down SCP’s deep defensive line. Paderborn then stole the points right at the end of the game with one of their only clear-cut chances of the half.
