Werder fell to a 3-1 defeat against FSV Mainz on Bundesliga Matchday 33. The hosts took their chances effectively in a largely even game between the two sides. Yuya Osako pulled one back for the Green Whites shortly into the second half (58’) after early goals from Quaison (25’) and Boetius (30’), before Fernandes sealed the victory for Achim Beierlozer’s side five minutes from time (85’). Elsewhere, Fortuna Düsseldorf’s draw against FC Augsburg means the relegation battle will go to the final day.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made two changes to the side that lined up for Tuesday’s defeat against Bayern Munich. Christian Groß replaced the injured Kevin Vogt, while Josh Sargent took Milot Rashica’s place in the side. Werder started the game in a fluid 4-1-4-1 formation, with Groß siting just in front of the defence.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Friedl, Moisander, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie, Groß, Osako, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Bittencourt, Sargent

On the bench: Kapino, Augustinsson, Rashica, Selke, Füllkrug, Pizarro, Langkamp, Bartels and Bargfrede.

Mainz hit a quick-fire double

The highlights from the first half:

4th minute: Werder with the first chance of the game! Josh Sargent catches the volley sweetly, but Müller manages to get down well in the Mainz goal to push it out for a corner.

25th minute: Mainz take the lead through Robin Quaison. Brosinski’s free kick causes havoc in the Werder box and the Sweedish striker gets in among the defenders to bundle the ball home.

30th minute: Mainz double their lead. 2-0. Latza marches his way through the Bremen defence, before setting up Boetius, who finishes coolly past Pavlenka from 16 yards out.

43rd minute: Another chance goes begging for SVW! Josh Sargent finds Yuya Osako in a great position, however his header is too central, and Müller easily manages makes the save.

45th minute + 4: Half time in Mainz! Werder find themselves two goals down after what has been an even first half here. It’s not over yet!

Osako’s goal not enough

The highlights from the second half:

54th minute: Niclas Füllkrug has been a real threat since coming on! The striker picks up the ball in the Mainz area, beats one and gets the shot away however the Mainz goalkeeper makes yet another save.

58th minute: GOAL! Werder pull one back! Yuya Osako smacks the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net after some nice work by Niclas Füllkrug down the left-hand side. Come on Werder!

66th minute: Great save by Pavlenka! Mainz hit Werder on the counter and Onisiwo plays Szalai through 1 on 1, however Werder’s number one makes himself big and saves with his feet.

85th minute: Fernandes seals the win for the hosts. 3-1. Baku charges towards the Werder penalty area and plays through Edimilson, who dinks it over Pavlenka to restore Mainz’s two-goal lead.

90th minute + 5: Full time in Mainz. SVW fall to defeat against the Zerofivers, who were much more clinical with their chances. The relegation battle goes to the final day as Werder take on Köln.

Match summary: It wasn’t Werder’s day in the end. The Green-Whites started the game well with a number of opportunities, however, ultimately their failure to take their chances led to their downfall. Florian Kohfeldt’s side now have to pull themselves together for the final game of the season against Köln, as they need a win to give themselves any chance of survival.
