SV Werder have secured their place in the relegation playoff after a convincing 6-1 win against 1. FC Köln. Three first half goals within just seven minutes put the Green-Whites on course for victory (Osako 22’, Rashica 27’, Füllkrug 29’). Florian Kohfeldt’s side continued their dominance into the second half, with additional goals from Davy Klaassen (55’), Osako again (58’) and substitute Josh Sargent (68’), despite Dominick Drexler’s consolation goal for the visitors (62’). Elsewhere, Fortuna Düsseldorf’s defeat against Union Berlin sees them drop into the automatic relegation position on the final day. SVW are yet to find out who their opponent will be in the playoff.

Line up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made three changes to the side that lined up for the defeat against Mainz last weekend. Niclas Füllkrug, Milot Rashica and Kevin Vogt all came into the starting XI, with Josh Sargent and Leonardo Bittencourt dropping to the bench. Christian Groß didn’t make the squad.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Vogt, Rashica, Osako, Füllkrug, Veljkovic, Moisander, Gebre Selassie, Klaassen, Friedl and M. Eggestein.

On the bench: Kapino, Augustinsson, Selke, Bittencourt, Pizarro, Sargent, Toprak, Bartels and Bargfrede.

The highlights from the first half:

5th minute: Werder have started the game well! Yuya Osako and Milot Rashica both with chances early on, however Timo Horn does well to deny the duo.

20th minute: Milot Rashica almost slips Niclas Füllkrug through on goal, however the pass is slightly too short.

22nd minute: GOAALL! Yuya Osako breaks the deadlock! Maxi Eggestein finds the Japan international just outside the six-yard box, and the striker finishes beautifully into the top corner. 1-0!

27th minute: GOOAALL! Milot Rashica! What a goal! The Kosovan turns the Köln defenders inside out before firing a shot under the legs of Timo Horn. Elsewhere, Union Berlin have taken the lead against Fortuna Düsseldorf!

29th minute: GOOAALL! FÜLLKRUG MAKES IT THREE! Friedl whips in a peach of a ball, which is magnificently turned in by the toe of the striker. What a start for Werder!

45th minute: The half time whistle blows. Werder have blown Köln away in this opening period!

The highlights from the second half:

55th minute: GOAALL! Davy Klaassen makes it 4-0! Rashica’s strike from distance is deflected by Sebastian Bornauw, before bouncing off the post and into the path of Davy Klaassen, who taps home his first of the afternoon. Meanwhile, Union have doubled their lead against F95.

58th minute: GOAL! 5-0! Osako converts from Gebre Selassie’s cross to grab his second and Werder’s fifth.

62nd minute: Köln pull one back. Rashica’s back pass is too short for Jiri Pavlenka and Dominick Drexler latches onto it before coolly finishing past the onrushing goalkeeper.

68th minute: GOAL! Josh Sargent gets in on the action! He starts the move by winning the header, before receiving the ball back from Milot Rashica and dinking it over Timo Horn. Great goal!

81st minute: Milot Rashica comes millimetres away from scoring his second goal of the day. His left-footed strike bounces off both posts before rolling painfully away from goal.

90th minute: Full time! Werder win 6-1 and Fortuna Düsseldorf’s result elsewhere means that SVW move up one place into 16th and confirm their place in the relegation playoff!

Match summary: The dream is still alive! SVW have earnt themselves two more matches to fight for their Bundesliga survival. Either FC Heidenheim or Hamburger SV will travel to Bremen for the first leg on 2nd July 2020. This will be decided on the final day of the Bundesliga 2. season tomorrow (28th July 2020).
