Werder and Eintracht Frankfurt shared the points in the last Bundesliga match before the international break on Sunday night. SVW travelled to Frankfurt to face Eintracht in their own back yard and were put under immediate pressure from the hosts, who started the game dangerously. However, SVW managed to keep them at bay and took the lead through Davy Klaassen in the 27th minute, and entered the break one goal ahead. After the interval, Frankfurt were the much better side and finally got their equaliser in the 55th minute. The hosts seemed to have won the game just minutes before the final whistle, with Silva grabbing a goal in the 88th minute. However, Milot Rashica’s stoppage time penalty kick meant that the honours were even. There was one particular player who stood out for SVW: Jiri Pavlenka.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made just one change to his starting line-up after last week’s draw at Dortmund. Milos Veljkovic earned his first start of the season, replacing Michael Lang. Gebre Selassie returned to his more comfortable right back position. Florian Kohfeldt lined his side up in a fluid 4-1-4-1 formation, with Nuri Sahin joining Davy Klaassen and Maximilian Eggestein in the midfield. Milot Rashica and Leonardo Bittencourt played on the wings, while Josh Sargent led the line up front.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Friedl, Groß, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie, Sahin, Rashica, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Bittencourt, Sargent

On the bench: Kapino, Lang, Pizarro, Langkamp, J. Eggestein, Ihorst, Goller and Bargfrede

Crossbar, Klaassen, goal!

The highlights from the first half:

7th minute: Early chance for the visitors! Bittencourt wins the ball back shortly after losing it and launches a counter-attack. The ball finds itself to Maximilian Eggestein who shoots from the edge of the box but can only find the post.

20th minute: Pavlenka keeps it at 0-0 – for the moment! The hosts are starting to take control and are putting SVW under lots of pressure. Paciencia, Rode and Kamada combine well in the Werder box before Kamada takes a strike at goal, but Pavlenka magnificently tips the ball onto the crossbar.

28th minute: GOOAAL FOR WERDER. Klaassen gives SVW the lead against the run of play! Get in! What a scrappy goal. Sargent took the initial shot on goal after being played through and Frankfurt’s goalkeeper Rönnow could only manage to parry it into the path of Bittencourt, who hit the crossbar with his first attempt. His second attempt is blocked by Hinteregger but the ball falls kindly into the path of Klaassen who smacks Werder into the lead!

45th minute +2: Halftime in Frankfurt!

What an end to the game

[Translate to Englisch:]

46th minute: Pavlenka keeps Werder in front with a great save. The chance comes from another cross from the hosts, who have been dangerous in the wide areas so far. Pacienca meets the cross with his head from 9 metres out, but Pavlenka saves magnificently.

55th minute: Pavlenka is finally beaten! Rode scores an absolute screamer from the edge of the box to equalise. A goal has been coming...

88th minute: The game seemed to be fizzling out, but Frankfurt have taken the lead right at the death. Pavlenka initially saves Pacienca’s header, but Andre Silva is there to tuck home the rebound. 2-1.

90th minute + 1: Werder have equalised! Rashica from the spot! Hasebe takes down Klaassen in the area and the referee awards a penalty. Werder’s rocket man stays ice cold from 12 yards.

Summary: The Green Whites came up against a quick, dynamic Frankfurt side who proved to be a constant threat from the wide areas. Nevertheless, SVW managed to keep Frankfurt at bay for the majority of the game, largely thanks to the brilliant performance from Pavlenka. The half time lead was very flattering, but not entirely deserved. SVW struggled to get control of the ball in the second half and went a goal down in the 88th minute. Rashica converted a stonewall penalty right at the death to earn a point for the visitors. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt will use the international break to prepare for the game against Hertha in two weeks time and will hope for a much better offensive performance from his side.
