42,100 fans all breathed a sign of a relief at the sold-out wohninvest WESERSTADION as Werder Bremen finally picked up their first win of the season, with a 3-2 (2-1) victory over FC Augsburg on matchday 3. It was a back and forth encounter with the visitors, who were a man-down from the 34th minute (Lichtsteiner, second yellow), equalising twice through Ruben Vargas (12’, 46’). However, for Werder Bremen, Yuya Osako was the man of the hour. The Japanese forward gave Werder an early lead (6’), before netting the winning goal in the second half (67’). In between his two finishes, Josh Sargent put away a fantastic goal (21’).

Line-up and formation: It had been hinted during the week that the recent loan signing from Borussia Mönchengladbach, Michael Lang, would be adopted straight into Florian Kohfeldt’s starting XI. Due to Ömer Toprak’s calf injury, Theodor Gebre Selassie was moved into the centre of defence to partner Niklas Moisander. Lang slotted into the vacant right-back position. Josh Sargent also made his first start of the season, joining Niklas Füllkrug in attack, supported by the flexible midfield diamond. Johannes Eggestein missed out due to suspension after picking up two yellow cards in last week’s game against TSG Hoffenheim. Kevin Möhwald was also unavailable on account of a short-term knee injury.

Werder’s starting XI: Pavlenka, Lang, Gebre Selassie, Moisander ©, Friedl, Sahin, M. Eggestein, Klaassen, Osako, Sargent, Füllkrug

On the bench: Kapino, Groß, Straudi, Gruev, Harnik, Pizarro

Vargas’ shock only short-lived

The highlights:

6th minute: GOOAALL! 1-0 Werder! Yuya Osako! A perfect start for the Green-Whites. Friedl wins the ball back in his own half and Werder move the ball about quickly – Füllkrug’s chip-through ball finds its way past FCA’s high line, putting Osako through on goal who slots the ball past Koubek.

10th minute: Pavlenka saves! Augsburg catch Sahin in possession and Gregoritsch plays through Vargas, who tries to sneak one in from a tight angle, but Werder’s keeper manages to get a foot on it.

12th minute: Goal for FCA. 1-1. Ruben Vargas. The visitors equalise. No one is picking up Lichtsteiner on the right-hand side who whips the ball into the box and Vargas rises the highest to head home the fourth headed goal Werder have conceded this season.

21st minute: GOOAALL! 2-1 to Werder! Joshua Sargent! What a goal! Lang just about manages to keep the ball in – Sahin plays an incredible ball over the top from his own half, finding Sargent who controls the ball in the air and takes the ball over Koubek before calmly slotting it into the net.

30th minute: Uduokhai’s knee saves an almost certain goal from Eggestein’s effort from twelve yards out.

34th minute: Red card! Stephen Lichtsteiner gets sent off for a second yellow! Augsburg down to 10. Füllkrug gets played down the left-hand side as already-booked Stephan Lichtsteiner clips the striker’s heels. The referee has no choice but to send him off.

45th minute + 3: Werder enter the break with a deserved lead.

A nerve-racking finish

46th minute: Goal for Augsburg. Ruben Vargas makes it 2-2. Can you believe it. The second-half has barely begun as Niederlechner leads a counter-attack down the right-hand side, before laying it on a plate for Vargas who only has to put the ball into the net.

57th minute: Osako cuts inside from the left and aims for the top-right corner, narrowly missing the target.

67th minute: GOOAAL! 3-2 to Werder! Yuya Osako! Werder score their third goal of the game. Friedl finds himself with time and space down the left-hand side and fires in a pin-point cross to the unmarked Osako, who volleys the ball into the net from eight yards out.

75th minute: FCA are raising the pressure. Once again, Bremen lose an aerial duel in a dangerous area, however, newly-substituted Finnbogason can only direct his header over the bar.

82nd minute: Augsburg hit the woodwork! They aren’t quite beaten yet. A lucky escape for Werder as Niederlechner’s left-footed strike smacks against the post.

85th minute: ...and breathe. Pavlenka spills Max’s deflected free-kick, but The Green-Whites manage to scramble the rebound away from danger.

Match summary: Werder had a lot to make up for, and Kohfeldt’s side achieved that today. Their attack proved to be too strong for Augsburg, with their quick link-up play. The roaring sense of euphoria following Osako’s opener was short-lived, as Augsburg managed to quickly equalise. However, Werder weren’t fazed by this, and continued to create numerous chances – with Joshua Sargent taking one magnificently. But, rather than building on this, the 10 men of Augsburg managed to equalise once more through Vargas, not even a minute after the start of the second half. Once again, Werder had to pick themselves up and try to hit back with another goal of their own: The outstanding Yuya Osako finally decided the match, despite a further few shaky moments before the final whistle.
