SV Werder have a new team captain. Niklas Moisander will lead the Green-Whites on the field from now on, head coach Florian Kohfeldt announced on Thursday as part of training camp in Grassau.
Moisander, previously Werder’s vice-captain, will take over the role from Max Kruse. “Being named captain of a Bundesliga club with such a rich tradition is a big honour for me,” said Moisander. “I have experience with the role from my time with Ajax Amsterdam, and have always taken responsibility since joining Werder. I am looking forward to getting the chance to lead this team.” Vice-captain for the the upcoming season will be Davy Klaassen.
“In addition to having valuable international experience, Niklas has a natural authority. He has a calm and agreeable manner but is also highly motivated and determined, all of which have made him a close confidant and a go-to guy for me over the last few years,” said Florian Kohfeldt.
Niklas Moisander joined Werder in summer 2016. The Finn won the Dutch league three times with Ajax Amsterdam and featured in over 40 Europa and Champions League matches. Moisander is also Finland’s captain, having made 62 international appearances.
