Sunday is crucial. Niklas Moisander and Co. are desperate to pick up their first points of the season against Augsburg. “The game is extremely important for us and we are determined,” said Werder’s captain despite their torrid start to the season, picking up two consecutive losses and numerous injuries. Moisander is filled with confidence, and senses the same feeling amongst his teammates. “We believe in ourselves as a team, and we play football the right way. We can gain confidence from the fact that we didn’t play badly in the first two games.”

Of course neither the central defender, nor any of his teammates are happy with the current lack of points. Nevertheless, the captain is adamant that, “we are ready!” The Green-Whites will host Augsburg at 15:30 CEST, who have only picked up one point from their first two games. It’s important for them to win the game at the wohninvest Weserstadion so that they enter the international break on a positive note.

It’s fair to say that Florian Kohfeldt isn’t exactly spoilt for choice in terms of selecting Moisander’s defensive partner, with four first-team regulars currently out injured. There’s no beating around the bush for the captain, who is aware of the unfortunate nature of the situation. “Nevertheless I have complete confidence in my teammates – in Theo at centre back, who has already shown his quality in that position against Mainz, and in Maxi as a full back,” assured the defender.
The captain of the U23s, Christian Groß, also had an “almost perfect pre-season”, making him another viable option for the vacant position next to the captain in the heart of the defence. Moisander is convinced, “we can deal with it; we know what we have to do on the pitch.”
