Maximilian Eggestein often takes matters into his own hands, and it’s not part of the 23-year-old’s nature to search for excuses. However, he couldn’t deny that the mid-season training has allowed him to return feeling refreshed, something that was not the case during summer pre-season following the U21 EUROs. The past two weeks have not only helped Eggestein prepare himself for the second half of the season, but have also helped the entire team get back on track towards finding their “own identity.” According to Eggestein, new signing Kevin Vogt could be a key piece in this process.

The low point of an overall disappointing first half of the season was a 5-0 thrashing at home against Mainz. Now, several weeks on from the defeat, Maximilian Eggestein is able to better reflect on Werder’s final home game of 2019. “That was an extreme example,” he said. “We conceded one to two goals and completely fell apart.”

Thanks to the winter break and mid-season training camp, Werder are on the path to finding their way back to their “own identity,” one that defines itself through courageous, high-risk and attacking-oriented football. These are all traits that new signing Kevin Vogt is able to identify with, having made a good impression already during his first training session with the team. “I think that Kevin fits in well with us at the moment,” Eggestein said in the Mixed Zone on Wednesday. “We had lost a bit of our courage, something that he demonstrated during his introduction to the team and his first training session.”

Together with his new and old teammates, the midfielder is looking to be successful in Düsseldorf in order to dig their way out of the hole they currently find themselves in. The former Germany U21 international isn’t feeling the pressure, but sees it as “a massive chance to prove ourselves against a direct competitor.” “I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to get back on track quickly,” said Eggestein. At the same time, he’s well-aware of the reality currently depicted by the table. “The situation is dangerous, as we’re in the relegation zone,” he said. “We’re not naive enough to think that everything will go our way. There will be difficulties along the way.” But, the strategy is clear: “We want to pick up as many points as possible, in order to move up in the table as quickly as possible,” Eggestein said. With a match against Düsseldorf on Saturday on the horizon, it seems as though there’s no better time than the present to get started.
