The Green-Whites have a decent record against Borussia Dortmund under Florian Kohfeldt. Out of the five matches he has managed against them since taking charge, Werder have only been dealt with one defeat, picking up two wins and two draws in the process. The supporters will probably remember the victory in the round of 16 of the DFB Pokal last season as their most fond recent memory against them.
5th February 2019: Werder Bremen won on penalties after two periods of extra-time to put them through to the quarter finals. It was a huge moment in their season, when everyone in Green and White started to believe that something special could happen. “We have had lots of good performances against BVB and we want to maintain this,” explains Maximilian Eggestein. Werder also managed to turn around a 2-0 deficit against Dortmund at the end of the season to keep their European dream alive.
In the end it unfortunately wasn’t enough for Maximilian Eggestein and Co. to qualify for European competition, but the 22-year-old remains optimistic ahead of the game at the Signal Iduna Park. “We are going to Dortmund to win,” Eggestein claimed confidently, and already has a clear idea of how the game could go on Saturday evening: “It’s simply not in our nature to say that we’re going there to park the bus and to play for a point. That’s not how we like to play football.”
