There were lots of positives to take from Werder’s 3-2 win against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night. Finally a win at home again, through to the quarter final, three goals to enjoy and many others. However, Werder’s head coach believes the most important thing to take from the game is that, “we played our style of football again.” Werder managed to carry out an even game despite being the outright underdogs, earned a deserved victory and showed what they’ve been missing over the past weeks and months.

On the match:

Maximilian Eggestein: “We finally played well at home again. Now we need to soak up the atmosphere and take the good feeling with us into the next game.”

Jiri Pavlenka: “The win was extremely important for our confidence. We really wanted to win. We used the ball brilliantly. We wanted to take the game to them, not just defend. We knew that we had nothing to lose.”

Niklas Moisander: “We knew that we would get chances if we played bravely. We’ve got our confidence back. The fans were absolutely amazing. We’ve had lots of bad performances at home, but we’ve finally got a win again. I was really determined today and tried to give the team lots of encouragement.”

Marco Friedl: “It was a classic cup game under the lights at the WESERSTADION. You start to forget where you are in the league in these sorts of games. We played with confidence, from the first minute to the last. In the end it was a close, but deserved victory. We need to do this in the league now as well. You could see today what we’re capable of. We know that we don’t deserve to be in the relegation zone.”

Milot Rashica: “First of all I’m really happy for the fans. It hasn’t been easy for them recently. When we play like we did today we’re capable of winning every game. And that’s what we did. We had nothing to lose today. Sometimes you try everything but the ball just doesn’t go in. We scored some great goals today. There have been times in the past when we’ve played well but come away with nothing. That wasn’t the case today and we want to take this momentum with us into the next game.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “We worked well as a team today. I’m proud of the boys. We did our talking out on the pitch.”

Davie Selke: “It means so much to us. We knew that Dortmund are a tough opponent, but anything is possible here in Bremen. The team deserve a huge compliment, especially for today. These are the type of nights that make me proud to be here.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Tonight was really fun, but also extremely nerve-racking. The best, and most important thing, is that it was an even game and we played our style of football again. I haven’t seen that for a long time unfortunately. We perhaps should have scored even more goals. Nevertheless, I’m delighted for the guys who got their goals out their today. They will take a lot of confidence from it.”

On the fight at the end:

Niklas Moisander: “He fell down to the floor and my emotions got the better of me. I think a yellow card each was the right decision from the ref in the end. Perhaps I showed a bit too much emotion.”

Marco Friedl: “I need to watch it back again. I ran towards the ball but it certainly wasn’t a penalty. If the shoe was on the other foot I wouldn’t have thought it was a red card either.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “In my opinion he didn’t hit him but it could have been a red card. It wasn’t clever from Niklas. I think it was the right decision in what was a very heated situation, but at the end of the day I’m the Werder coach. I can also understand why Dortmund are annoyed. There have been more blatant mistakes against us in the DFB Pokal before so we just have to get on with it.”

On the upcoming game against Union Berlin:

Jiri Pavlenka: “It was a fantastic game today, but the three points on Saturday are just as important. We need to believe that we can get the win. We showed what we’re capable of today and need to do the same against Union. We need to prove that we can beat the teams around us at the bottom of the table.”

Niklas Moisander: “We need to take the confidence with us into the game against Union. There are lots of positives to take. We were both brave and aggressive.”

Leonardo Bittencourt: “We need to take the positives from the game. We showed our quality today against a really strong opponent. We need to do more in the Bundesliga.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It will be a completely different game on Saturday; the boys are aware of that. But I don’t want to be negative. I told the boys at half time: That was fantastic. They saw today what they’re capable of and need to do that again at the weekend. It wouldn’t be right to play down what we did today and say that Union is more important. We need to keep the confidence flowing.”

On the criticism of Florian Kohfeldt:

Leonardo Bittencourt: “The coach has said all of the right things. I respect Florian for how he’s handled the situation. He’s given us a lot of confidence. I think everyone could see today why he’s the right coach for us.”

Jiri Pavlenka: “We’re all really happy with Florian. We enjoy working with him. I’m delighted that we were able to win today.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Of course it’s a nice feeling that the squad believe in me and have said that publicly. It’s important for a young coach like myself. I get the feeling that the boys are happy with us in charge but the victory today was completely down to them. I’m really happy; it hasn’t been an easy past few months.”
