Bad news for Werder Bremen: Ludwig Augustinsson and Ömer Toprak will be unavailable for an extended period of time. In the case of fullback Ludwig Augustinsson, an arthroscopy has revealed an injury that was not previously apparent through the initial examinations that were conducted by a number of doctors.
The medical team, along with Augustinsson, made the decision last weekend to carry out surgery, after achieving very little success through the conservative methods of treatment that have been used over the past few weeks. The injury means the Sweden international will be unavailable for the next three months.
Centre back Ömer Toprak is also out of action. The new signing picked up a calf injury against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday. An MRI scan revealed a muscular tendon injury for the former Turkey international. Toprak will be unavailable to Florian Kohfeldt for an estimated total of six weeks.
“Of course it’s a huge blow for us, because they are both key members of our team. But we won’t sit around and feel sorry for ourselves, but rather accept the situation and put out a team against Augsburg that can win us our first three points of the season,” explained head coach Florian Kohfeldt.
In the meantime, Sebastian Langkamp, Milos Veljkovic and Milot Rashica will train individually as part of their rehabilitation process. Claudio Pizarro is still recovering from illness so did not take part in Tuesday's session.
