Werder had to come from behind for the second time in two weeks after Stuttgart went ahead in the second minute with their first attack of the game. The Green-Whites took longer than their opponents to settle into the game and create chances. Shortly before half time, Kruse worked the ball to Davy Klaasen, who fired in the equaliser from around 20 yards out (45’). The second half belonged to Werder, but they couldn’t score despite their chances. The best opportunity fell to Sebastian Langkamp, but he couldn’t connect with the ball (78’).

Line-up and formation: Werder made two changes. Nuri Sahin came in for Philipp Bargfrede (thigh), and Josh Sargent made his first Bundesliga start in the place of Johannes Eggestein. The team lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

Werder go behind early

2 mins: Goal for Stuttgart. Beck plays the ball forward and Mario Gomez flicks it on. Steven Zuber then picks it up and runs through on goal, finishing low past Pavlenka.

9 mins: Stuttgart again. Sahin and Moisander aren’t on the same wavelength and Mario Gomez ends up through on goal, with Pavlenka saving to stop Werder going two goals down.

15 mins: First chance for Werder ends with the ball dropping to Rashica inside the box, but he puts his effort over the bar.

45 mins: GOAL for Werder – Davy Klaassen! Klaassen shifts the ball onto his right foot before firing into the corner from 20 yards out! Game on!

45+2 mins: Half time in the Weserstadion after a much-needed goal for the home side.

Chances, but no goals

61 mins: Claudio Pizarro, now the oldest goalscorer in Bundesliga history, comes on for Josh Sargent.

71 mins: Chance! Rashica does well and Pizarro almost has a chance but he can’t control the ball.

78 mins: Another chance! Gebre Selassie gets his head on a corner and Zieler makes a great save! Sebastian Langkamp is then inches away from the rebound and putting Werder into the lead.

90+5 mins: Full time in the Weserstadion.
