Werder beat Schalke 4-2 on Friday evening in a game that was well-fought right until the end. The result means that the Green-Whites are still unbeaten in the Rückrunde in their quest for European football. Breel Embolo put Schalke ahead before Milot Rashica equalised for Werder almost immediately with a smart finish. Captain Max Kruse then scored a penalty before Rashica kept a cool head to put the home side 3-1 up. Embolo also got his second of the evening to set up what looked to be a nervy finish, but Martin Harnik put an end to this with an injury time goal on his return from injury.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made two changes from the draw against Wolfsburg. One was forced with Milos Veljkovic coming in for the injured Sebastian Langkamp, whilst Claudio Pizarro started in the place of Johannes Eggestein up front. Fin Bartels returned to the Werder squad after 15 months out and took his place on the bench.

Pavlenka and Rashica key in the first half

6 mins: Great save from Jiri Pavlenka! Augustinsson was caught on the ball leaving Embolo to race through, but Burgstaller was denied by Pavlenka!

20 mins: Another great save! A Schalke free kick leads to a shot from Nastasic and Pavlas saves Werder once again.

26 mins: Goal for Schalke – Breel Embolo. 0-1. McKennie beats Moisander in the air and releases Embolo, who fires past Pavlenka to put the away side in the league.

31 mins: GOOAALL for Werder – Milot Rashica! Kruse plays a one-two with Davy Klaassen and then crosses into the box, where Rashica strokes home the equaliser!

Harnik rounds things off

49 mins: What a chance for Werder – Rashica does well on the right before Klaassen has an effort cleared off the line!

50 mins: Penalty for Werder! VAR intervenes and says that Max Kruse was pulled down as he went to meet a cross.

51 mins: GOOAALL – Kruse scores the penalty! The captain is ice-cool from the spot and rolls in the spot-kick to put Werder into the lead!

73 mins: GOOOAALL! Milot Rashica, 3-1! Kruse again does well and gets the ball to Eggestein, who finds Rashica at the back post. The attacker doesn’t rush things, instead cutting back onto his right foot and firing the ball home once again!

80 mins: Nübel keeps the guests in the game with a fantastic save one-on-one with Kruse.

85 mins: Goal for Schalke – Embolo gets his second of the game to make it 3-2 from a corner.

90+4 mins: GOOALL – Martin Harnik! Hano rounds things off for Werder, scoring a fine finish after coming off the bench.

90+5 mins: Full time in the Weserstadion.

Match summary: Werder came back from behind quickly and never really looked back after taking the lead. Milot Rashica again showed his goalscoring form that he’s adopted since the turn of the year. It looked like it could be a nervy finish, but Martin Harnik scored on his return from injury to settle the nerves.
