After the successful past week, Werder were given a dampener by "die Werkself" from Leverkusen. With a final score of 6-2 to Leverkusen, Werder finally fell to defeat in front of their home crowd. "Such a disappointing day will boost our development. We will come back stronger and learn from our mistakes," explained Florian Kohfeldt after the game.

WERDER.DE heard and collected together the thoughts of the players and staff after today's loss.

On the game:

Frank Baumann: "In my opinion, we were more in the game in the first half. However, we allowed them to counter us too often. Leverkusen have quality in attack and they were very efficient."

Nuri Sahin: "We should not be conceding six goals in any game. After going behind I thought we were still in the game. We simply gave them too many chances. After getting back to 2-3 we then lost it."

Florian Kohfeldt: "There were phases where everytime either team lost the ball, they had a chance to score. We are normally good at transitioning between attack and defence but that was not the case today."

Sebastian Langkamp: "I can't completely give an explanation of the today's game. We lost the ball many times and so they countered a lot. There was a feeling that everytime Bayer had a chance, they would score. Their fourth goal killed us off."

Maximilian Eggestein: "We were sloppy on the ball and were constantly defending against their counterattacks. Today is a bad day for us. After we got back to 2-3 we had to take risks but unfortunately it resulted in them scoring their fourth goal that finished us off."

On the defeat:

Florian Kohfeldt: “Unfortunately it was just one of those days. We will come back stronger and learn from our mistakes.”

Sebastian Langkamp: “It was a real setback for us today. It’s understandable that these things happen of course. The amount we conceded was so surprising, but we were able to focus well after last week’s win, so we should be able to do the same thing this time around as well.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “It’s not all bad, as we’re still fourth in the Bundesliga. We weren’t bad for the full 90 minutes today either.”

Frank Baumann: “We’ll analyse everything in detail and talk about today’s game.”

A look towards Flensburg:

Florian Kohfeldt: "Early tomorrow we will analyse today's game and then we'll start the preparations for the match against Flensburg. It's good to play directly after a defeat."

Maximilian Eggestein: "It was a spectacle today, but unfortunately a spectacle at our expense. It's good that we get the chance to play again on Wednesday."
