SV Werder Bremen will be without club captain Max Kruse from the 2019/20 season. On Friday, Sporting Director Frank Baumann announced that the 31-year-old will be leaving the Green-Whites once the current campaign comes to an end.
“We always stressed that that we wanted to continue working together with Max. However, he has come to the decision to search for a new challenge after three years at Werder. We respect this wish. It was important for us to have some security in our planning for next season. This is now ensured and we are certain that we will have a strong squad for the 2019/20 season,” explained Baumann, who was emphatic in his thanks for Kruse’s appearances for the club: “Max came to Bremen at a time when it wasn’t clear that a player of his quality would want to join the club. He has helped shape Werder’s last three years, given the team character and played a decisive part in the development of the club.”
Coach Florian Kohfeldt also has plenty of praise for Kruse: “Max is an outstanding player who has impressively and exemplarily proved over the last three years how valuable he can be to a team. My relationship with him was built on the greatest trust, something which you perhaps wouldn’t get in a normal player-coach relationship. I wish Max all the very best for the future.”
"I really enjoyed playing for the club for three years and proudly captained the side too - that will always be a great memory for me," commented Kruse on his departure.
Max Kruse returned to SV Werder Bremen from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2016. He played 84 times in the Bundesliga, scoring 32 goals. He also appeared in nine DFB-Pokal games, netting on three occasions.
