Werder’s birthday week showed just what Florian Kohfeldt’s team are capable of. The Green-Whites won on penalties in Dortmund and were 3-0 up after just 28 minutes against Augsburg at the weekend. They did this with a new system based around counter attacking. Werder’s tactic of having a lot of possession didn’t get them as many points as they would have liked in the Hinrunde, so the coaches decided on some new ideas.
Florian Kohfeldt has noticed a definite improvement in Werder recently: “We’ve done what we wanted to in the last few weeks. In Dortmund, we didn’t do much in attack for 70 minutes and we were often just defending. That’s not like us, but we have to be defensive in some games in order to be successful.” The Green-Whites seem to have learned how to do well without the ball recently.
“The boys realised themselves that they found the key in the Dortmund game. I’m proud of the team for that, as it’s one of the most important steps,” said Kohfeldt. Werder have put in some good performances recently, and the goal is still to get points on the board: “We’ve won games in ways other than good football recently. We have to keep at that,” he added.
The focus now turns towards the game against Hertha Berlin this Saturday (18:30 CET). If Werder win in Berlin, they’ll have won three out of five games in the Rückrunde.
