Long awaited, yet short-lived: those few seconds will remain in Jerome Gondorf’s memory for a long time to come. Gondorf scored his first goal in a Werder jersey in his twelfth appearance for the club: “I saw the ball roll slowly towards the line and that Joshua Kimmich wasn’t going to get there. Of course I was over the moon!” This was the first time that Werder had the lead against Bayern since 2014. In that game, Theodor Gebre Selassie scored early to give put Werder in front, but they ended up losing 5-2. Gondorf's goal in the 25th minute was the earliest Bayern have conceded this season, yet at the end of the match neither Gondorf nor his teammates could be overjoyed with their efforts. “The goal was nice, but nothing more. We need points and we didn’t get any at the weekend.”

Looking good is not enough: it can’t be overlooked that in recent weeks, the Green-Whites have repeatedly shown progress. Even after the match against Bayern, Florian Kohfeldt’s team received plenty of praise. “We use the ball better,” said Philipp Bargfrede, but that is not enough, “we are down at the bottom and results aren’t going our way. It’s not good enough for us to just look good on the ball.” Bargfrede insisted the day after the game in Munich that all the players were aware of the team’s situation, saying “I know that the players understand. They know what’s up, they’ve seen the table. Even the way they speak after the game shows that they know it will be a fight.”

Leading assist provider: Max Kruse is now Werder’s leading assist provider of the season so far, with his fourth and fifth coming in the game against Munich. However, the 29-year-old will not be able to celebrate his performance with the team getting straight back to training on Monday morning.

Record-breaking Brazilian: Naldo has done it! The ex-Werder player has equalled the Ze Roberto's record for appearances in the Bundesliga for a Brazilian player. He has now appeared in the Germany top-flight 336 times, with 173 of those being for Werder. The central defender leads the way ahead of Dede (322), Cacau (307, received German citizenship in 2009) and Marcelo Bordon (297). With respect to Werder alone, Naldo is ahead of Ailton (219, 169 for Werder) and Diego (161, 84 for Werder). Congratulations Naldo!

The DFB has fined SV Werder a sum of 24,000 Euros for two counts of unsportsmanlike behaviour of its fans. The governing body said that pyrotechnics were used in the home game against Hannover 96 and in the away game at Borussia Dortmund. Werder has agreed to the judgement and the verdict is final.
