The Werder players were exhausted but pleased after the win in Augsburg. The game finished 3-1 after a sensational first half, in which Belfodil scored a brilliant brace to fire Werder into the lead. The second half saw a goal apiece as Kruse wrapped up a vital three points for the Green-Whites with his late strike. Despite several chances to seal the win earlier in the game, the Werder boys were pleased to come away with all three points. “We didn’t use our chances effectively enough,” said Kohfeldt. Werder’s position in the table seems somewhat more comfortable with an eight point gap to the relegation places but all Green-Whites can agree that the fight for survival is not over.

The players’ and manager’s thoughts after the away-win in Augsburg.

On the performance:

Max Kruse: “In the first half, Augsburg had no answers and we fully deserved the 2-0 lead going in at the break. We didn't afforded them any room and really showed our quality, which was exactly what the coach wanted. Then we sort of let go of that in the second half but fortunately we managed to get the decisive goal and seal the victory.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We played exactly as we wanted to in the first 45. We occupied good spaces and made the most of our chances. In the second half, we lost a lot of second balls and Augsburg showed how good a side they are. With Gregoritsch’s free-kick we were massively thankful to Jiri for keeping that one out to prevent the equaliser. At the end of the day, we walked away deserved winners I think.”

Sebastian Langkamp: “We played really well throughout the game. The first half was great to be a part of but the score at half time was a bit deceptive. Like the game in Gladbach when we went in 2-0 down, in this league it’s never over. We didn’t do that well when they put us under pressure in the second half but our goal came at the right time and I think despite being under the cosh at times, we fully deserved the win.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The first half was great. We linked up well and played with good, short passes. We created a lot of goal-scoring opportunities and didn’t let Augsburg settle. At the same time, we also looked tight at the back. The boys showed everything I wanted them to and executed it nearly perfectly. At times in the second half I was frustrated; Augsburg definitely improved but we weren’t clinical enough on the counter. We left a few goals out there but that period of the game was relatively short.”

Frank Baumann: “I have rarely seen two halves the same in my career, even when one team is so dominant in the first. Augsburg got themselves back into the game in the second half, like we did in against Gladbach. At the end of the day, you’ve got to say that the team with the greater chances should walk away the victors and today that was us.”

On the table situation:

Max Kruse: “It is a bit misleading. If we would’ve lost today then everything would’ve closed up again. However, we did well to come away with the points today. The relegation places now seem pretty far away but we shouldn’t lose sight of them.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We’re still right in the middle of a relegation battle, even with the eight point gap. We shouldn’t be thinking about Europe or anything like that.”

Sebastian Langkamp: “In my opinion, today was a huge jump towards safety. We wanted the win today to be able to go into the international break full of confidence. That was crucial and we succeeded in doing that but now we need to keep pushing forward.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “I have never doubted the quality we have in this team but you’ve got to respect everyone around you. Two things are hugely important at the minute; we are not there yet and we can’t lose sight of our aims. I have been in these supposedly comfortable situations before like last season with the U23s and if you look at Stuttgart two years ago. Thinking you’ve done it is the worst thing you can do. Secondly you should never be satisfied with what you’ve done; we must always have the desire to improve even if we sit third in the table resting on your laurels is a huge mistake.”

On Ishak’s brace:

Ishak Belfodil: “It’s not about my goals or my performance, it’s about how the team play and today we did really well. I always look to help the team as much as I can.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “Ishak has huge amounts of quality, we all know that but he just needs to make it count in terms of goals, which he hasn’t managed in the past. Today he did and I’m really happy for him.”

Max Kruse: “Our strength in depth is really great. We will need all of the players we have in our squad. We’re really working well as a team. Today I’m really pleased for Ishak, he got his brace today and is looking better and better.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Ishak has the stature of a target man and the technique of a pacey winger, which isn’t a bad combination if you ask me. He has worked his way into the team really well since his move. He knows his role and he knows what is expected of him. His head will be held high after his first goal today. I’m so pleased for him that he got on the scoresheet twice.”

On the international break:

Maximilian Eggestein: “I’m really looking forward to joining up with the U21s, I’ve been there a couple of times and it’s a nice change. I would love to get some game time but obviously I’m not going to be demanding every minute.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The boys deserve to have a few days to relax. We got back on the 1st January and haven’t let up since. This week is a normal training week but next weekend we can all switch off and have a break.”
